DVD films - copy to PC - how to do this?

He would be talking about the DVD's, 4.7GB and more likely 8.54GB for the more usual dual layer disks. These are maximums. VLC or similar players take up very little space.
Ripit4Me is useful to go with DVDDecrypter as it allowed DVDDecrypter to rip newer disks that were released after DVDDecrypter updates were stopped, but even Ripit4Me was stopped so will not work with all things.
DVDFab HD Decrypter is freeware and it's a more limited version of DVDFab which can only rip the DVD to the hard drive and not do the extra things.
Free burning programs:
ImgBurn
CDBurnXP
Burn4Free
Nero BurnLite this will be a lot bigger than the other freeware programs, it does also have a toolbar which probably isn't wanted.
Here are a list of Media Players, look for the Freeware ones, those that don't have adware which is marked under type.

We have some films on DVD which we'd like to be able to copy to our PC/laptop so we can watch them on the move without having to carry around the DVDs.

Thanks so much for your post, this certainly looks (!) straightforward so I'll give it a whirl! Just realised I only have CD discs though (hadn't appreciated these won't work!) so will have to guy and buy some DVD discs tomorrow! I'll get there eventually I hope!
Surely this defeats the whole purpose of this topic as you didn't want to have to carry around DVD's?
I nearly removed my previous post with links because when I re-read the post of yours that I am quoting, I first thought that you didn't actually have any DVD Movies and were planning on going out to purchase ("rent") some. I then thought that maybe you needed some blank DVD's to make copies of your DVD's. After re-reading your first post I cannot understand why you would need them after you said that you didn't want to have to carry DVD's around. Which comes back to the renting again.:eek:AirCooledHeaven wrote: »
I already linked that in the post immediately above yours.0 -

I humbly apologise and acknowledge that you were the first one to post this link... Happy now ?0 -
You could try the VLC player to rip your movies: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/2696/how-to-rip-dvds-with-vlc/0

Hi (again!)
Feeling like a bit of a fool now but have downloaded Imageburn and bought blank DVD discs. Put disc in drive but it won't recognise that there is a disc in the drive and keeps asking me to insert one.
All along I had been assuming I had a drive capable of copying blank discs but now I'm beginning to wonder as I've never done this before. Please can anyone tell me how I find out what type of drive I have and if it is capable of burning discs? And/or if the drive is okay for doing this why it refuses to recognise that there is a blank disc in the drive?
The discs I bought are just Maxell DVD+RW single sided 4.7GB data discs.
Many thanks for any advice on this..0 -
many disc drives struggle with different makes of RW discs
For the price you can get recordable ones, id use them personally. If it fails, just throw it away
My local tesco has packs of 25 TDK DVD-R for a fiver. How much were the RWs?
You could try updating the firmware (if it can be), but in my experience, it wont make any difference:idea:0 -
Hi AlienRik,
Thanks for your reply. They were £5 ish for a pack of 10 and I thought they'd be useful as I could from time to time back up my music to them too which is why I thought the re-writable ones would be better.
Sorry, but clueless as to "updating firmware" - can you tell me how to go about this pls?
My computer is old-ish though so I'm beginning to think now that it might be that the drive itself is too old and is one that does not copy. Pls does anyone know how I can find this out?
Alternatively I could try my laptop as that it newer than the computer.
Many thx.0 -
No disrespect, but updating the firmware is probably a no no in your case.
Youd need to find out the 'exact' make and model of drive you have. Then we could find firmware (maybe)
But if its such an old drive, it probably doesnt have upgrades anyways, and if it does it could prove difficult to install (And theres always the danger of 'bricking' it - bricking means its dead)
My only advice is to try and get a hold of a standard dvd recordable blank disc (decent make like TDK, SONY etc), and see if it works
Not sure off the top of my head how to find out if its capable or not through the use of software (That might have something to do with my incredibly bad hangover though)
