3 yr old falling out of bed

Hiya all

My 3.5 yr old son managed to fall out of bed last night and split his ear on a toy fire engine :( Me and him both are shaken by the whole thing at the minute, there was a lot of blood and he could barely breath for shock. Carpet, teatowels and flannels took a lot of blood and it wouldnt stop coming.

Paramedics came out but he was still too hysterical to let them touch his ear and due to the split inside the edge of ear (where it curls) they couldnt apply stitches without pinning him down. They decided that as it was hidden in side the rim of his ear it shouldnt become infected and not to clean off the blood until today when he was more comfortable. That done, the split is quite visible and to be honest has upset me all over again.

I feel so horribly guilty. I took his bedguard off last week as he wasnt rolling all over the bed anymore and staying in one place. We decided to give it a go with a duvet on the floor for the first week and stopped doing that a few days ago, last night he had put the fire engine on the floor by his bed when he went to sleep ( I didnt know this but wish I had checked)

He has been as bright as a button today and even made me smile when he studied his ear in the bathroom mirror and shouted 'mummy, mummy my poorly ears gone' until i told him it wa the other ear!! That has reassured me isnt in any pain as he doesnt even know which flippin ear it is!!:rotfl:

The cabin bed (mid riser) we have on order for the end of april, will have to be left in the garage until we have got our confidence with the bed situ again.

Anyone reassure me im not a rubbish mummy?? Will this set us back in the bedguard stage?? Anyone reckon my sons cabin bed will be up before the end of this year :o????

No you arent a rubbish mummy - and you are not to blame for him leaving a toy on the floor! I wouldnt put the bed guard back unless he asks for it, but perhaps leaving a pillow or folded duvet on the floor for a few more weeks? then with the new higher bed perhaps a fluffy rug to go with it?

Don't feel guilty, anything that kids can do - they will do. He's happy now, and that's good enough. Ears tend to be !!!!!!s for bleeding as well.
I say this as someone who's old enough to be his great grandma and who fell out of bed a couple of nights ago, much to my suprise. No fire engine to bang my ear on, just the handle on the bedside table drawer to give me a whack on my arm :rotfl:
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
  • Of course your not a rubbish mummy. Accidents happen - especially with 3.5yr old little boys!;)

I would just put the duvet back for a while.

My ds didn't fall out of bed for ages. We got him a new mattress and he fell out a few times. i now put his thomas the tank engine bean bag chair by his bed (near his head end) in case he falls out. Although my son seems to know he is falling and sorts of falls with style :rotfl:and then snuggles up on the floor and goes back to sleep :rotfl:

My ds is tall for his age so he went straight from a cot to a normal single bed. Is your ds in a single bed or a toddler bed? I am just wondering why you are rushing to put him in a high sleeper? I can understand if you are trying to move him from a toddler bed but I don't think I would be happy with my ds in a high sleeper of those for atleast another year.

  • Aww, don't punish yourself about it. Like the other poster said, you didn't leave the toy on the floor.

My DD (12 in June) still falls out of bed sometimes. The noise she makes as she hits the floor is enough to make you think that she is going to land on the kitchen table, bringing the ceiling with her.

She had a cabin bed from about the same age - but actually fell out of it less. Possibly because she knew there was a sizeable drop?

If you are really uncomfortable with the cabin bed idea - it does put paid to comfortable bedtime stories, little cuddles, easy bedmaking and suchlike - unless it is being built to order, you would be able to cancel and order something slightly less high.

Having said that, DD1 had the normal low cabin bed and was absolutely fine, never fell out of that, a normal bed or the top bunk. So all kids are different.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Cabin beds usually have a kind of guard on them anyway, like a high edge, so as long as the mattress used is the right size he's less likely to be able to fall out of that.

Don't give yourself a hard time about him falling, it's just one of those things. You could have had that duvet there for months and still sods law would mean he'd fall just after you'd moved it.

cabin beds have sides so he shouldnt be able to fall out. my oldest 2 had cabin beds at 3 and never fell out, now they are in bunk beds and dd fell out of the bottom bunk as no side (we now tuck her duvet in both sides so she cant). My youngest is in a mid sleeper bed which also has sides and has not fallen out.
You are not a bad mum. kids fall out of bed all the time. hope you feel better. x

Thanks all for reassuring me. Im glad its not just me who has this issue!!

Yes hes in a full size single bed and went into that at 18 mths with no probs. No reason behind it, I couldnt see the logic in a toddler bed when we had a perfectly good single bed in his room anyway.

The reason I thought I'd try without the bedguard now was because the cabin bed will be here soon and if there was a problem without a guard I'd rather know now then when he dropped from a height (thank god i found that one out!!).

His younger sister is 18 mths and the plan was that she'd go into his old bed and all the potty training to come with her can be on the same bed so we get plenty of use out of it before buying her a nice bed in years to come. Hence we came up with the idea of replacing DS bed first and handing his old bed and bedguard down. I really dont want to fork out for another single bed for a few months use at the most. I'd rather keep DD in cot and DS in bed and keep cabin bed in the garage for a while

Its not being built to order its a bed that we've ordered second hand but wont be delivered til the end of the month. That suited us fine as we are decorating his room next month anyway.

It was all going to be a big surprise to come home from nursery and see his mural wallpaper of pirate ships and a new funky bed. He has no idea and I was getting rather excited at seeing his face :o

Thanks for your comments, I hope I sleep better tonight cos I spent most of last night waking at the slightest noise :rotfl:

please don't worry and beat yourself up about it - its happened, that's life, he will be fine.

its amazing how kids manage to grow up and survive isn't it (mum to 2 kids, one grown, one almost)?

Accidents do happen, don't beat yourself up. Just make sure the floot is clear where he may fall next time. My son managed to fall out of a cabin bed when he was 18!!!
