I know lol but it's still much better than where we are now , crime rate half what it is here , it may not be padstow but the quality of life will be much better than this place, where stabbings , dirty needles and domestic violence are mainstream.

the rent is lower in Cornwall than here (southampton) how does that work lol !!

With the same income and lower LHA you are likely to get less benefit. This is because your income was assessed and the calculation meant you were deemed to be able to afford rent of XX; as LHA for your area was XX + a little bit, you were given the little bit of LHA to enable you to manage.

If you move to an area with a lower LHA then that little bit of help you were calculated to need will be lower or disappear.

example. If your current LHA allows for a rent of £180 a week and your income assessed as you being able to afford £150 a week, you would be given £30 a week. If you move to an area with an LHA of £160 a week, your unchanged income means you can afford £150 a week, so the benefit payment to you reduces to £10 a week.

Same would apply on re-assessment when the new LHA levels come into play. A lower LHA means you get less support.

we are fully prepared for him not finding a job and have prepared financially so we are covered

I find this statement added to the fact that you owe the council £900 in arrears a bit contradictory.

probably .... we are going either way, I know from personal experience it's not a bad place to be having stayed there plenty of times and spending 6 months in and around the area when younger , I'm not a fantasist who thinks the whole of Cornwall is like doc Martin , all countys have better and worse areas don't they , as family we need each other this was the first inspiration for the move , but I have factored everything into my decision .

Could you not apply for a Council Exchange? I think all Councils have a list of people who want to move/exchange inbetween areas? Could be very detrimental to give up your tenancy I think

yes I suppose it does , the reason it's still high is the council proposed us to pay off £40 per month from the debt assuming we would be here for a longer period of time this would have been fine but now we need to pay it off more urgently , also last time we were not prepared for hubby to be out if work and didn't have anything to fall back on , we didn't claim housing benefit which is how the debt amassed it was a stupid mistake but we are in a better position now and will pay substantially more off this debt than the council previously arranged.

we have looked into this via homeswapper unfortunately noone wants to move , we live in a 3rd floor walk up block flat which doesn't put us in a favourable position really , to be honest giving up my council tenancy does scare me , my youngest starts school next year though and we are both willing to work our backsides off to make this work , in an ideal world we would exchange but it's not going to happen, and my daughter would be 18 before we get a house round here worthy of anyone considering swapping to as the current wait is 7-8 years plus , if we both work around each other as we do now we would still be able to provide the support my brothers family need.

I know this is stupid but I have to be nearer family in cornwall as they need support for their soon to be born disabled daughter.

While I think it is commendable that you are prepared to move across country and give up a secure tenancy and hubby's job to support family, I do worry that you are causing great upheaval and possible hardship to your own family in order to do so.

Also, until the soon-to-be-born actually appears you won't know the extent of the disabilities, the amount of support that will be provided by the NHS and SS and the amount of help your brother's family will actually want or need.
