mountainofdebt-I am also concerned that op states that dd would not be required to serve in areas of conflict and would be based in the UK. Something doesn't sound right there.
  • It's great that your daughter is so determined, I wish her luck with her degree.

Little bit confused about the applying to study medicine thing though? Is she planning to do that after her first degree? Neither Huddersfield nor Leeds Met offer medicine as a degree, and just because the Navy has said they will support her during the course doesn't mean she will get in... And how does this relate to counselling?

Not trying to be rude, just worried you/she is confused?

The standard approach for students just starting university with accommodation to pay for before the grant/ loan comes through and no other financial help, is to open a student account with one of the major banks. They generally offer an interest free overdraft on their student accounts which will give you enough money to pay the accommodation until the loan comes through.

    Hi,

I also have Hashi's and found out midway through my absolutely terrible first year.

The only benefit that I was able to recieve was disability in youth which was £90 odd a week.

Also I got some disabled student allowance for anything I needed, like if i didn't already have a computer and printer (including insurance), printing paper and ink. They also paid for my internet. You have to pay for these then send a copy of your payment and they refund you in about a week.

I also got an access to learning fund from uni which was over £1000.

If you need any help/advice or anyone to chat to about studying with hashi's feel free to pm me!

    Hey there,
This question has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with studying or finance lol! BUT my 14 yr old DD has Hasimotos and has recently had a total thyroidectomy. I was totally unaware she could be eligible for DLA? Did your parents get this for you? And how has it effected you as you have got older?
Thanks so very much in advance

I never considered even telling the uni I had autoimmune thyroid disease, think from reading about it before DLA would only be available whilst it is unmanaged thyroid disease, saying that I've never felt like mine was under control.

I went for loans etc at uni but never wrote down anything about the thyroid disease as I didn't see it relevant

I would love to get some help with heating bills as I get alot colder than other people but through uni the only problem was brain fog which was hard to control, I did much better on exams after lunch as it takes me hours to get going, so most of my morning exams involved me staying up all night.

I think I probably could get disability allowance as I now have arthritis and something wrong with my tailbone and kneecap, obviously when you have one autoimmune disease you are likely to get another

    good luck
