Can anyone give us some help with this please.
Our Daughter is starting University in September 2011.
she suffers with autoimmune hypothyroidism disease and requires some Financial Assistance for her accommodation.
we,as her parents have used every single penny we have to help her & have ran out of cash,we live on disability allowance, sodidnt have a lot of money at the best of times.
we really need some Financial assistance to pay the deposit for her accommodation,if we can get this it will be used to pay her deposit if we get help soon enough, the university reduces her weekly rent, which means the saving would allow her to buy essential things such as books, stationary, food & other thing needed while she is at University.
if anyone can help we would be very grateful,we very honestly have tried to do all that we can without having to ask for help, but now we have gone as far as we can.

Does she claim DLA?
You can't get any student funding before her course actually starts, I'm afraid.0 -
Does she need adapted accom as a result of her condition, or is it just that you cannot afford it?Gone ... or have I?0
-
we have been told that she will be able to claim DSA and has just been told that she can now apply for this,so fingers crossed.
the accommodation would not have to be adapted,it is purely a case of us having tried to help her until our money ran out, which it now has.
the assistance we would need is just for the deposit for her accommodation, which if paid early enough, will mean that the uni can reduce her weekly rent by £12,00.the saving would be used to enable her to buy other things needed to help her study.0 -
Student accommodation was paid after the student loan came through for my son. I don't see how she will any worse off than someone else whose parents are on benefits, unless there are additional costs for her because of her illness. I would speak to the finance office at the university they will have dealt with these problems many times. Well done to her for not letting her illness hold her back0

Thanks ekkygirl,we are so proud of her for all of her Achievements, she wants to become a counsellor so that she can help other people, the Royal Navy have said that they are prepared to sponsor Chelsea,so that she can become a Doctor, she would have to join the Navy, then help people suffering from Combat Stress & other problems.0 -
Hypothyroidism rarely causes problems with daily living (at least once the individual is on treatment), I think you have to enquire of the university finance office - they are likely to have come across quite a few students whose parents are unable to help their offspring financially.
I am not clear - are you saying that if you pay the deposit then OVERALL her rent will be less? or just that you end up paying some upfront?0 -

according to the University,if the deposit is paid early enough, then the rent (for all students who pay early) is reduced by £12.00 per week.0 -
I think several universities offer a discount if the rent is paid 'upfront' but I haven't heard of anyone being given assistance to pay a deposit so that they can get a discounted rent. It sort of sounds a bit weird that a Uni would basically be giving you the money to do this and then you also benefit by way of a discount for doing it.
With you being on disability allowance I would imagine that she would be entitled to a full grant plus the 'standard' loan and dsa to help with costs associated with her disability so basically she would be in the same position as the majority of all the other students.
I would doubt very much if you would get assistance for this and I also doubt that many students(or their parents) would do this unless they are pretty well off.
Didn't know anything about autoimmune hypothyroidism disease so have just looked it up and tbh I am really surprised that the Navy are prepared to sponsor her especially as she would have to join the Navy and generally anyone requiring to take treatment/medication on a daily/regular basis(?) would not be considered suitable for the Services (speaking as a former member myself and having looked further into it for child of mine who has a disabling condition and off to Uni(hopefully September subject to grades) too.0 -

Are you sure it's not the entire amount? I've never heard of any university offering a discount for a deposit. Which university is this?0 -

Chelsea is at present a Leading Cadet at the local Sea Cadet unit, she has looked into this a lot by herself, apparently "its not cool to have mom & dad helping".
she has told us that the Royal Navy are prepared to sponsor her & she has made them aware of her medical condition.
she would not be in a conflict area & would only be based in the UK.i think her Commanding Officer at the Sea Cadet Unit has also looked in to it.0
