'Hubby' is absolutely cringemaking but I don't mind 'other half' or, 'OH'.

Come to that, you don't hear: "the husbandly person" much (ever).

"wifey" is usually said by the sort of person who says "scuse I" and "pas de problem". :D

All the kids around here call their girlfriends/boyfriends/close friends of the opposite sex 'wifey' and 'hubby'. Literally makes me cringe
Foreign politicians often zing stereotypical tunes, mayday, mayday, Venezuela, neck

I'd imagine this has already come up after twenty-odd pages but when the hell did so many people start replacing 'have' with 'of' in text messages and with posts on message boards? :)

"I could of gone to the shops."

"I should of bought a loaf of bread."

This didn't happen a few years ago. What on Earth possessed people to start doing it? Uneducated people hearing things like 'should've' or 'could've' in conversations and thinking that it is written as 'could of'? :D

    That's exactly it.

On the topic of the growth of illiteracy, when did the change from:

"you should not say: 'for free', it's ungrammatical, say either 'free' or 'for nothing' "

to everyone almost exclusively using 'for free', take place?

Certainly when I was at school you would have lost marks for using 'for free' but about 15 years ago it seemed that everyone switched wholesale.

I used to joke that we'd eventually get some idiot saying 'for expensive'. I haven't seen that but I've seen 'for cheap' a few times. rolleyes.gif

'Bang on trend'....bleugh! I blame Gok Wan for that one (even though I usually love him :))

Another vote for 'hun', makes me want to vomit and it always sounds so patronising and insincere.
'Mate'.....hate that one too, round my way it's considered fighting talk!

    I blame Joni Mitchell :(
