I had a similar-ish experience at the self scan in Tescos...

If you go to a human being, they will take vouchers even if you haven't bought the product, but if you go to the self scan, they will only accept vouchers if you have purchased the item (same shop, different policy!??)

Anyway, a while back they had Bodyform on a "buy 2 for £2 offer", and I bought 6 on the self scanner and paid with 6 £1.00 manufacturers coupons (all perfectly legitimate, they were vouchers I already had and because I had bought the products Tescos would accept them all).

The point is the lady that was manning the self scans practically jumped on me, demanding to know what I had very loudly and drawing attention to me from surrounding customers - I calmly explained to her and then she got her keys and started dismantling the machine to find my vouchers. Her attitude was awful quite honestly. She looked most disappointed when she checked my coupons and had to concede that I hadn't done anything wrong!!

Don't let this one person's appalling attitude get to you.

PS My local Asda has a sign on the self scanners asking you to alert a member of staff if you intend to use a voucher.

No doubt she was wearing a happy to help badge. I shop in Marks and Spencer and buy all my food from them. I find the quality excellent and very reasonsable.

Asda are XXXXX rubbish - don't forget they are owned by Walmart. One time my local branch decided they were going to offer the 'service' of lockers for shopping you'd already done when you arrived. Obviously to save on security expenses regarding shoplifting. There was no compulsion as such - just staff diving on you at the entrance to 'remind' you of this wonderful service.

My mum didn't choose to take them up on it on her weekly shop - and the staff member at the till DEMANDED to see in her bag, with no reason given - the reason was pretty obvious, she was being treated as a shoplifter until proven otherwise.

Oh, and when my dad went down to complain, a security guard nearby sneered and told him to '!!!! off', which the manager my dad was talking to then pretended he hadn't heard.

No, I don't give Asda much custom.
  • I presented my Luncheon Vouchers (courtesy of Pinecone Research) at an Asda till last week to have something similar happen.
The checkout operator had some or other message come up that she was to call a supervisor for authorisation.
Given that LV's are not money off vouchers in quite the same way I was surprised.
I was told that all vouchers are now supposed to be authorised to prevent people using "too many"
    Be warned!

That sounds sensible. If they're problematic, customers should be warned so that they can choose to use a staff-operated checkout instead. If the OP is not satisfied, perhaps s/he could write to their head office suggesting that such signs should be introduced in all stores. That, in addition to staff retraining where necessary, should stop anyone else having to suffer such an experience.

hammy its ASDA,s policy to take any coupons up to between 10 or 15% of your shopping as long as they are not store specific e.g. boots coupons I knew this before I tried it. Tonite I went back to asda for the 1st time since and the supervisor said the s/a can take 1/3 of my shopping in coupons. on the way home the bum fell out of the polly bag and my celebratory bottle of wine smashed in the street:mad: phoned back down and told them and c/s said "oh just bring down your reciept and the bottle kneck" as if I,m going to pick it up and bring it home:eek:
Did you keep the bag? If so, I'd take the bag with the receipt back to the shop and explain what happened, and that you sensibly disposed of the bottle in the nearest bin rather than take broken glass home with you. I'd also have taken a photo of the broken bottle, but obviously not everyone carries a camera. If the bag was packed by staff, best mention that too.
As for the widespread "policy" which some have mentioned of accepting vouchers for specific products even if those products have not been purchased, I would question the wisdom of posting that information on a public forum. The small print on the back says that the manufacturers can refuse to reimburse the shop for misredeemed coupons, so if they get to hear about it, a clampdown might follow.

I had a terrible time using those self scanners in Asda Livingston and the staff were real bullies too.

I didn't go back there for six months and refuse to use those pieces of junk.

I had a similar problem with the LV's last Christmas. I'd saved all of my vouchers for that big Christmas shop, I think they came to £32. I handed them to the SA and she questioned them very loudly, asking all the neighbouring till ops if they were accepted (I pointed out that they are for food purchases, and it says clearly on them that Tesco's accept them). She made a huge fuss before finally entering them all one at a time, slowing everything down and leading to dirty looks from the huge queue that was building behind.

Tesco's have been a pain before, I bought turkey and 3 other items a couple of years ago, using a trolley because a turkey is so heavy I couldn't have even lifted a basket. I used the basket till as I only had 4 items and the woman behind me kicked up a huge fuss, although I pointed out that I had 4 items and she had at least 15 in her basket. The woman on the till called the manager on me! I was FUMING! That was the most pathetic policy, glad most places have 10 items or less instead of basket tills now!

Yes, I know I was in the wrong in theory but talk about jobsworths!

I did take the bag back peril, but the as/manager was sent for. He told me I had to bring back the bottle kneck. I asked him if he would ask his wife to carry a broken bottle neck through the streets of Glasgow at night, as its a 20 minute walk to ASDA for me, got refund no problem:T
