Medion LCD 32" TV

I bought this just under a year ago and this morning when i've went to turn it on, its turning on but i have no picture at all, not even a blue screen. Its just dead.

I have luckily found my receipt but medion and aldi are both currently closed.

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this or if there is anything simple i could try to fix it while i'm waiting? Thanks.

It will more than likely be the power supply that has failed, not an uncommon fault in the budget sets due to the use of cheap electronics.

Cant really comment on whether they use good components or not but from what i know about medion, they're supposed to be one of the top german brands. Had loads of their products and never really had a problem until now, guess thats the law of averages for you though.

Dont know whether maybe i'm hearing things but its like i can faintly hear the sound. I have the tv in my bedroom hooked up to my xbox and its the notification noise i can hear (anyone with an xbox will probably know what i mean).

Although if it is a faulty power supply like you said, i take it this might just affect the picture.screen itself as might not have enough power for that?

Medion are well known for making decent pcs (or at least decent spec pcs)
Theyre not known for making decent tvs. You buy a cheap tv, you can expect problems

As Rik says, they do use decent components where their PC's are concerned (eg, ASUS motherboards), but the only reason they can keep the cost down on the likes of TV's is to reduce the quality of the components.

When an SMPSU fails, it can produce all manner of weird & wonderful faults.

My money is on under-rated (for temperature) electrolytic caps being used in the construction of the PSU, they have subsequently let go, and now the PSU cannot start.

Thanks, i've given Medion a call and someones coming to look at it thursday. I know my contract is with the shop but i figured i might aswell take the path of least resistance first.

And it wasnt really a cheap tv as such, i could have gotten it cheaper if i bought from asda or tesco (for example) and you can get samsung/sony tv's for less but i chose Medion as i have (perhaps blind) faith in them due to their products both myself and my parents have had over the years. That'll teach me!

  • Cheap??? My 32" Medion ( Tevion) was £799 - a few years ago. highest spec available at the time, twin tuner, pic in pic, multi screen and games pre-installed . . .

unholy, are you sure it isn't 3 years warranty ?

I didnt think i had mentioned a warranty, maybe less awake than i thought. But yes it is a 3 year warranty for the tv. Even if it were a 1 year warranty, its been less than a year (bought 29/03/10). I usually would deal with the shop (as per Sale of Goods Act) but they're not open till Monday and my parents had an issue with a motherboard previously and Medion were great about repairing then replacing it.

  • I'm not right with it either, thought you'd said just over a year ago. If you'd gone to the shop, I doubt it would have been any sooner and they would most likely asked told you contact Medion. Next Thursday isn't to bad is it.

Yeah they probably would have, figured cant hurt to see what Medion say and if it comes down to it, i can go through the store later on.

And no its not so bad - less than a week away and gives me time to catch up on the books i've been buying and not reading :o
