Auto renewal who has been caught out

For clarification, what you are saying is that you got the renewal letter and decided to ignore what it said?
For clarification.
I received no renewal letter. or any other communication from the time I took out insurance on line. Not even to confirm I had taken out insurance. The certificate was printed out on-line.

I had never heard of 'auto renewal' before getting a letter threatening debt collectors and Bailiff's.0 -

You chose an online company though where you knew all communications were electronic. For clarification.

it has been around for decades. Although it has become more common in recent years as more people move to monthly payments.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. So where was the email quoting my renewal premium?
Did it go in a "spam" email folder? Do you check your "spam" folder regularly? My email puts messages in my inbox or spam folder seemingly at random! I always check my "spam" folder as well, which sort of defeats the object!0 -

Its as simple as making a note on a calendar, I have done this for next years car insurance. So in december I can cancel the renewal if its too high.
I also make a note of renewals on the calender!!!!
Swift car insurance sent me a reminder (1 month before renewal date)that they are auto renewing my car insurance even though I told them last year that I did not want it.
The quote they gave was very high, so I got others and got a cheaper quote.
I emailed Swift and told them that I did not want to auto renew as I have a cheaper quote which I will take, but gave them the oppotunity to try and beat it.
A week later (today) I got an email from them saying "We are sorry that you have chosen not to renew your swiftcover car insurance policy with us this year. If you change your mind before your renewal date you can still renew your policy by logging in to your Swift Space."
Half an hour later I got another email from them "
Your policy will automatically renew in 7 days time on 28/03/2011 at 00:01.
Payment will be automatically taken from you on 28/03/2011. "
My point is what happens not just to me (but to others), if I take my new quote and pay on the due date and Swift also take money with the auto renewal putting my account in the red?
I can see there will be a lot of people going in the red when the new law comes in very shortly, that you always have to have your car insured even if you don't use your car unless you declare it SORN like the road tax. So is auto renewal with us now for everyone??Look after the Pennies and the Pounds will take care of themselves. :beer:0 -

If that happens then that is bad. Not sure what happens in this instance, print off the email and contact the bank and cancel the payment?
It used to be so simple "in olden days"Know the difference between what you WANT and what you NEED. :T0 -

It was AMAZING how many people on here, made excuses for Swiftcover and their ilk, and blamed me for being negligent about my insurance renewal.
They didn't know what they were talking about of course, because I've never missed the date.
Being called negligent and a liar by some, it's a wonder I didn't resort to obcenities.0 -

Just had to chase and chase and chase my broker for a renewal quote, 3 times, weve sent it/we are going to send it. A week before renewal was due I finally got them to email me a PDF (after a stand up fight over the phone) of the paperwork over and guess what? the price has doubled. Now call me a Cynic but I really do believe they were doing everything in their power not to send it to me so it auto renewed.
Iv called/emailed/and just put a recorded letter in the post telling them not to renew me under any circumstances. I really dont think it should be this way. I certainly wont use this broker again......3 defaults removed,, 1 judgment set aside
