Hi, this is the Daily Thread for Friday 18th March. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.
Morning all
I'm up at silly o'clock here, too many things buzzing round in my head.
I had a very annoying visit with a social worker last night, I did manage to keep my temper but it was bloody hard work. She insists that I cannot be CRB checked as I don't have a passport, she insisted she was right even though I had with me the list of required documents we work from at school. She isn't prepared to accept my existing CRB either.
I'm so glad it's Friday as it's not nice at work at the moment, everyone is so stressed, the kids will be hyper as it's RND & they are not in uniform, they are supposed to pay £1 for that priviledge & most don't pay but turn up in mufti anyway & the head will be in a bad mood as he hates non uniform days.
Have a lovely day everyone.
Hugs Hester

Hi Hester and all who follow. Hester - I hope the day goes well for you although your work sounds like a nightmare! That social worker needs her head examined!
Well, it's been ages since I've been on here - I must have missed loads. I do read most days but with all the work going on in the house, the time just runs away with me,and I haven't read for the last couple of days. I shall be so glad when it's all done and dusted - we're at the snagging stage now but, as DH is working most days now, the last little bits seem to be taking longer than all the major structural stuff.
My good news is that my fourth grandchild was born on Wednesday - a little girl called Megan, who weighed in at 8lbs 12ozs after a Caesarian under general anaesthetic due to complications. Mum and baby are doing really well, and Summer, who is now seventeen months old and a real character, has a little sister.
We are hoping to go back to the UK to see them all in April. French red tape has interfered with our health cover here so, at the moment, we have no EHIC cards which we'll need to cover us back in the UK in emergencies. The French red tape does my head in - it makes the UK look very efficient and organised!
I would love to have been able to see the new baby a lot sooner but I shall content myself with the thought that at least I will be seeing them soon; when I think of what else is going on in the world right now, I think I am very lucky. The news coming out of Japan is truly heartbreaking - I think it must be the worst thing to have happened in the world in my life time, and I wonder if the country will ever recover?
I hope you are all well. I bet I've missed lots of newbies so welcome to you all!
My BM has finally given up the ghost. The spindle that the paddle sits on has broken; the machine has been discontinued and no-one sells any spares for it so I shall reluctantly take it to the tip. I only paid £7 unused in a charity shop about five years ago and it's been used every other day, so I think I have had good value from it! We don't like the bread here - the French sticks become rock hard within ten minutes of slicing them, and the other loaves always seem very chewy, so I've been making bread by hand. It's a bit more faffing about but we like the results so I shall carry on doing that. The BMs here are twice the price as in the UK, so I might buy another one when we visit home.
Dinner tonight will be sausages from our local English-run farm but I don't know what else I shall do with them.
The weather, after a bitterly cold winter, is now becoming milder and we've had some lovely sunny days over the last couple of weeks.
Well, I'd better get DH up for work.
I hope you all have a great day.

Morning everyone!!! Have I got a fantastic weekend ahead of me or what?????
Eldest DS is on autistic spectrum and has been behaving very badly (and violently) recently. DS2 has been getting the brunt of this and has been very upset. This has co-incided with a little windfall, so OH and I have decided to treat DS2. We have to take DS1 as well, but we're going to do things that DS2 likes. So today I'm picking the boys up from school at lunchtime, we're then driving down to London and will be going to see Mamma Mia (He knows every word of every song!), then tomorrow is on the London Eye first thing! After that it gets cheap - we'll go to the V&A Museum of toys (free and DS1 is doing old toys as a subject at school!) then onto the science museum and nat. history museum too. And the best thing is that I have managed somehow to keep all of this a secret from them, so they have no idea!!!
I am soooooo excited. Dinner last night was using things up in the fridge, and breakfast this morning will use up the milk, although I plan to take bowls, cereal and UHT milk with us for breakfast at the Travelodge! Must zip round and do a quick clean and tidy and put the washing on the airers to dry so they have school uniform for Monday. Then will whisk them off to school for the morning (ds2 wants to be a butterfly today???!!!) can't wait to see the looks on their faces. School were quite understanding, so DS1 must have flipped out there recently too!
Love, hugs and positive vibes to allMe, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx
March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.0 -
Morning Hester - and all who follow!
I've also been up since silly o'clock - I wake up and instantly my head is whirling with loads of silly stuff! I decided to get up and check the internet banking. Discovered it was as just bad as I'd thought!
Hester - what a stupid woman! Of course you don't have to have a passport - how on earth did she think you'd managed to get your other CRB done -as obviously you were given that without a passport! makes me really cross, as she obviously hasn't really read the requirements properly. My sympathies over how the kids will be if it's a non-uniform day! Ooh, some things I don't miss at all!
Haven't read yesterday's thread yet, so please feel free to take a ((HUG)) if you need one, people!
My WM is nearly finished, the DW is on and so is the BM. Life is a little fraught just now - DS back in MHU yet again. Wish I could see a good ending for all this for him, but no magic wand here.
We tried ChocClare's Chinese chicken yesterday - really tasty! Thanks for the recipe.
I hope to get some sewing done today, but there's a pile of paperwork screaming for attention first.
Hope you all have a great day - the weekend is nearly here!
Take care of yourselves.
(Edit to say - congratulations on the new grandaughter Mioliere - lovely name too! esmf - I hope you all have a fantastic weekend - it all sounds wonderful!Resolution:

Morning Everyone!
I am so pleased it's Friday!
Hester my son is so excited about RND and non-uniform! He dressing up as a blue monster (I better find the facepaint) and has a red nose monster too!!! However, he better pay for the privilege... children need to know that nothing in life comes free... I paid for the nose, he pays the school!
So today is work! But after work is a whole weekend... tomorrow is baking and errands, Sunday we are at a Christening. They booked a meal, and I mentioned in my RSVP I had Special Diatery Requirements and could they call to arrange something.... and over a week later NOTHING! So I called her... and she's like 'oh, we booked a Roast Beef dinner' to which I responded that the only thing I can eat is the beef, as even some veg I cannot have! She told me not to worry about it, she's sure they can change the meal to something else on the menu... I can't have anything else on the menu!!!!!
Anyway, I rang the golf club and spoke to the chef and explained my situation, and we took a meal I could have and we made changes to it... and he's going to make it for me himself on Sunday, all I have to do is tell the waiting staff who I am... and it's done! He bent over backwards to help (he has two children with food allergies, so he said he understood)! So I am really looking forward to sunday now
The Christening is for twins (boy/girl) so I bought them a tatty teddy (me to you bear) clock, and once i've made the card (same theme as the RSVP Card with ballons on it, with the childrens names on in calligraphy) I will add a message 'this clock is to remind you that every second, of every minute of every day is a precious as the last....'
Tonight is LO Chicken Tikka (I HM this for the first time on Wednesday... OMG! I am getting really good at curries!)
My Gran (who only eats bland food) has requested a Korma when she visits!!!! My son loves the Korma so much he's requested it for his birthday dinner! The great thing is the base of the curries have spices which aid the insulin resistance, and Kcal/Carbs are pretty low (Green GI/GL too!), and I always add 7 different veg in it too... so now I have mastered 3 curries (2 more to try) we are eating it a LOT!
Well I did go on today.... hope you all have a great day xxxWe spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy! Mortgage Free Wannabe :dance:Overpayments Made: £5400 - Interest Saved: £11,550 - Months Saved: 240 -

Morning all, and thanks to everyone for such a lovely warm welcome yesterday.
had a rubbish nights sleep last night, thanks to 4 rather large mosquito bites on my back. heaven knows where they have come from.. Wiltshire is not exactly tropical in March!
DH fell of his "not spending" wagon yesterday, decided to cheer himself up with new jeans and boots.... gggrrrrr. have pushed him back on it.
on the bright side it is Friday... and the weekend is quite free, so hopefully time to sit around and catch up on some reading.
Today I will write my shopping list, based on my meal plan, and pop straight to Aldi from work.
This evening I will blitz through the housework, prefer to do it on a friday to keep the weekend free.
If theres a bit of sun it would be nice to have a potter about in the garden and get my pots and planters ready for... well planting I suppose!
have a great friday everyone!
