Using a Private GP Service

  • My GP surgery has about 12 doctors - it is entirely feasible that you won't see the same one in a very long period.

My husband (who has MS) never visits the GP anyway, so it would be pointless asking for a report from them. His consultant, who has a full file on his symptoms and issues, would be a much better bet.

Actually I was responding to tanith's comment about private GPs taking your word for everything. My GP seems happy to take my word for everything without checking so what's the difference?

So if I walked into your GP surgery and said that I have extreme mental health issues as well as being unable to care for myself, they would say " I see, and you want me to put that information down on this 'ere form from the DWP?"

"Yes please, and anything else you can think of, as I need my DLA/ESA payment"

"OK, come back this evening to pick up the report"
    "Thankyou"

    On yer bike they would!!!!

For a start you would very unlikely to be able to chat to the GP - they are far too busy to listen to that load of dribble!!

ATOS stated that there was 'no evidence' of incontinence on my last medical - actually there is evidence going back 30 years. But it wasn't on my current GP's computer system and ATOS can't be bothered to check paper notes. All I did was mention it to my GP and hey presto, there it was on the computer but still with no referral to the paper notes! So how can going private be getting a made up report any more than going via the NHS or indeed any more 'made up' than an ATOS report?

I think it highly unlikely that any GP would risk their reputation in the way you suggest, be they NHS or private.

  • Hi all, its been great reading all the Posts on Private GP pros and cons, i found myself in a position recently where i decided to see a private GP in London. Alot of the downsides you have all been discussing were covered by this practice as they run themselves as a membership. This means now i have my own private GP in a lovely setting that i can see as many times as i like at short notice, speak to at the weekends to discuss worries and who can liase back into my NHS surgery as and when needed. For £30 a month i have unlimited appointments and telephone access with my private GP and once a year i get a Health Check as well so i can work on preventing getting ill as well as just seeing him when i feel unwell. Its great i know my cholesterol, Blood pressure and all sorts and my private gp advises what to do to improve. Great value and a better service than my local NHS GP.
  • A bit of a warning about going private...
If you are having private treatment for soemthing then the NHS doesn't have to carry on that treatment if you find yourself struggling financially.
If you have private acupuncture or similar then an NHS physio can refuse to deal with you while you are undergoing private treatment.
