    Why not.........?

If you look into the fuel consumption of the V70s, you'll find that the diesel auto has very much lower mpg than the manual auto. In comparison the petrol auto carries much less penalty relative to the petrol manual. The diesel auto still has higher mpg than the petrol version, but you pay disproportionately at the pumps for an auto on the diesel. Reckoned to be caused by the gear ratios and shift patterns in the auto not being optimised for the diesel engine.

Automatic? Hmm. Not sure if its worth getting an auto if you want a diesel at the same time. Not much of a point at that stage really.

That's odd, it was listed as manual. But I agree, I wouldn't go for the automatic, it still helps as an example of what he can get for his money.

My bro gets excellent mpg out of his V70 2.4 diesel dunno exactly what but 50mpg possibly better.

As i said i want a diesel, then that would not be an issue .......
Yes - and I think it's a BMW diesel engine in that. Don't know how good it is, but it shouldn't be confused with the gasket-blowing K series.

Right, situation as it stands at the moment, plannin to get rid of Primera, (its old and needs to much money spending on it, to keep it on the rd)
Will wanting to spend up to £3k on its replacement, and it needs to be an estate and preferably diesel.
Now i am leaning towards Mondeos, but i am not discounting other makes.
I know the Mazda 6 is Mondeo based, but are they comparable, same with the Saab 9-5,based on the Vectra platform?
How large are the Rover75/MG ZTT estates?? (i like the look of the MG version, i know sad ....)

I have seen some Avensis estates, but not in my price range.

Economy is not my main buying point,I need comfort and ease of driving as i will have to commute for a prospctive new job.

The 9-5 is an excellent choice, you can pick up a 54 9-5 Vector 2.2 TiD with about eighty thousand miles, for a lot less than four thousand pounds.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark
