Changes to Private Message settings

What’s happening?

Just to let you know, we’re going to be making some tweaks to private messaging settings to help prevent spam bots sending spam PMs.

This should only affect a small group of people and most regular forum users shouldn't notice any difference.

Hi Andrea,

Hope this is the right place for this.

I've started to get pages of gobbledegook popping up when I hit 'thanks' again.

What is driving me batty, though, is sometimes the pm pop-ups work, and sometimes they don't. Plus - regardless of pop-up or not, sometimes the top right strap shows zero messages unread, and the total doesn't change (when messages are waiting, I mean! )

Unless I keep checking my pm box every few minutes I don't know if there's one waiting.

you can also have an email sent to you when there's a new PM - if your email 'pings' when you get a new one, that should do the trick.

Sorry Outer Limits, I didn't spot this before.

Which browser and version are you using?

I don't think anyone else has reported this happening so I'm not sure what it is. I'll ask the techies to have a look at this thread.

It may also be worth looking to see if you have any browser settings, browser addons, security software etc that may be blocking pop-ups and web page generated dialogue boxes.

Also, have you tried testing it using a different browser?

You can send a PM to yourself, so that is handy when testing.

Ah. Sorry to make this hard work for you Andrea and Fermi.

I'm computer illiterate, and the machine is OH's so I can't change things.
(He knows a bit more than me, but not much )

Had these sort of probs before when everyone was having them and someone sorted me out a treat then *she says hopefully*

I'm using windows vista ultimate with IE8. Is that what you meant?
Normally the pm pop-ups and message total work well, and still have done since we did a free upgrade of AVG.
OH is not very keen on altering the browser.
Does the type of browser affect your vulnerability to viruses? Is one browser safer than another? And if so which?

Also noticed lately that sometimes I go back to a thread and a 'thanks' has unthanked itself - the same one more than once!

It's a good idea, but I have to keep the noise down in case I wake OH, who keeps sensible hours

Something slightly different, but started at the same time as the changes - I have twice now had a message saying that my IP address has been blocked, but then I refresh and am able to post! Doesn't really cause me a problem, unless of course one day the refresh doesn't reset it!
