I used to be on fludrocortisone partnered with midodrine but they changed the formulation (used to be pink and never used to need to stay in the fridge) and I took a really bad reaction to it.

I don't mind the black NHS ones but I always seem to get a prescription for "honey" or "beige" which are horrifically unattractive.

I know that you mean! I have to wear compression sleeves on my arms and they are far from attractive.

I did look into more attractive alternatives, but because I have to have them made to measure and changed every 6 months or so, I'm stuck with them unless I pay a fortune to get them from the USA. My NHS ones are made in Germany and very functional as you would expect.

A friend did buy me a fake 'tattooed' sleeve to put over them, but much as I would have liked to sport these for fun, they didn't fit!

That's a shame Jen - do you take anything else instead? I take fludrocortisone in tablet form now, I did have the solution that stayed in the fridge but it was so much hassle when travelling (besides keeping them cold, the bottles always leaked - including all over my favourite Paul Smith shoes once, grrrr!). I didn't even realise it was possible to get them in tablet form for years! I think it's only possible if your dosage is the same as that of a standard tablet though, and luckily mine is.

Honey/beige/white compression stockings are the pits. I like the idea of dying them :)

So ask your GP to prescribe black ones instead! There will come a time when these fade after one-too many washes and are only fit to be worn under trews.

A friend of mine just had to spend a year in a back brace which came in, you guessed it, "granny is ill" beige. But they happened to have one there which was multicoloured and so she asked asked about it and was told that they only did patterned ones for children. Well, my friend isn't exactly one to be fobbed off with conventions for which there are no rules or reason. Eventually she came out with a multi-coloured flowery one. Much more fun.

Worth bearing in mind for anything made to measure I would think.

Up until the end of last year my hearing aid moulds were coloured but now they wont give me the electric blue moulds that I have always used which causes me so many problems day to day because its so much easier when people realise Im deaf!

I have had loads of the yucky back braces/supports over the years and they are so horrible, I did pay for a custom made one once but it was mega bucks (I treated myself after I got my compensation for the crash) and I cant do it again, the NHS ones are supposed to be made for you but they are completly diffrent to a custom made.

I grew up wearing back braces (Milwaukee braces, with the high neck-ring) and back then they were salmon pink thermoplastic and cream metal. Lovely, just what you want when you're a little kid! I wore them from the age of 3-10. These days children get a choice of colours and patterns and the most commonly used brace is a corset-style one that can be hidden under clothes; it's good to see that things have been made easier for them.

The problem with the prescription is that a receptionist prints off the repeats and gets the doctor to sign, even though I always specify colours on the phone I almost always get "honey" or "beige" and the pharmacist has to give what's on the script.

I only ever get black with I get the prescription direct from the doctor but I feel bad wasting an appointment to specify the colour of my tights.

But can't you get a prescription when you see the GP about something else, and then you should have it ready as a repeat, IYSWIM.
