...... A box and a set of bars about three or four hundred at the most.

Where did I say it would be cheaper to hire?

You don't have to buy a box specific to your car, you do, however, have to make sure you buy bars, or a rack, that fits your car.

Personally, I would advice against a bag, they are prone to tearing and leaking and can be easily cut open by thieves. A lockable box is far more secure (not Fort Knox, but still more difficult to get into). Bars are more versatile than a rack (as well as being less expensive), they can be adapted to fit various attachments.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

I believe you will use something like 10-20% more petrol due to poor aerodynamics.

As said dont forget to check the weight limit for you car, the bars and the box especially as a lot of boxes appear to be limited to 50-60kg. To reduce weight how about using large holdalls rather that hard cases?

  • Thule make shaped holdalls to fit the roof box profile, can be had for about 40 if you look

Have a mont blanc box and cross rails which live on car near all the time and always remained dry. Mont blanc make many of the vehicle manufacturer branded boxes and roof bars.

Second ebay got Box brand new but damaged cardboard box for 60 (new 189), and rails for 30.

But in the bigger picture it is a saving -

Meant didnt have to change small car OH uses mainly round town with additional child, buggy goes in the roof box and can stil get shopping in tiny boot. Mainly low speed so increased drag make no difference.

    So overall very money saving

We use a roof bag, as at the time of purchase we had no where to store a roof box and could store the bag in our loft. We only use going to and from our holiday and take it off during the holiday. It has never leaked despite driving through thunderstorms.
