Useless, inflexible JobCentrePlus

In the nicest possible way, Jobcentres are extremely busy places at the moment and you're slotted into a short period to sign on. If you turn up outside of that time you may unfortunately have to wait a little while. There just aren't the staff numbers to have advisors on standby for people who turn up ad hoc I'm afraid, being able to be slotted in within 20 minutes is actually fairly efficient and reasonable if you ask me, I've waited longer to pay for simple train tickets.0

Could not another job centre adviser have signed the client on.Working class people attacking each other again. Makes me despair.0

The other advisors would most likely have had their own appointments to see. You are advised right at the start of the claim to let the jobcentre know if you are unable to attend-that is, beforehand so that arrangements can be made in good time, rather than calling after you have already missed your signing slot.
Mrs Manda is however incorrect-the maximum length of a sanction for missing an appointment as long as you attend within 5 working days, is 2 weeks, not 26. And you cannot be sanctioned for FTA if you only receive credits.
If you fail to attend and don't contact the jobcentre to give your reason within 5 days, the claim is closed.0 -
Many moons ago when I last signed on, you did indeed just turn up on the correct day and see whichever person came free first. I don't recall if you got a time but if you did it was probably quite a long gap available, so it's news to me that things are different now. What happens if someone is suddenly unexpectedly away eg if they suddenly became ill? Personally I don't think it unreasonable for someone to man staff lunch-times. Plenty of other workplaces have to do that.
And with a 2 year old in tow, depends whether they were fast asleep in their pushchair and being very vocal and fidgety to make me think 'I've had enough'. Of course, if I was getting paid (JSA) I'd sit it out but the OP states they aren't.
OP- I am guessing here but with you saying you don't receive any JSA. I am assumming you have a working partner? And that you have been out of work for over 6 months/don't qualify for JSA contribution based. Why not look into changing CB into your name? That would give you a NI credit.0 -

Thanks for your response to the sanctioning - it's nice to know people out there do know what they are on about instead of being ganged upon. I may have been a bit impatient in walking out (although I wasn't throwing a hissy fit as some have suggested) but there is more to life than worrying about not being able to sign a piece of paper for nothing.

Didn't know that, thanks - I've never claimed any state assistance since leaving school so it's a whole new ball game and a complete nightmare for a novice.0 -
The other advisors have their own appointments. People are talking as if these `advisors` were specialists in some way. My God, this is going way too far for £65 a week and job centre staff lording over the unemployed. Working people in this country have to wake up and rebel against this nonsense.0

They are 'specialists' in a way. Some are Personal Advisors take new claims, reviews, variation on a jobseekers agreement, some will be Disability Employment Advisers, there will be Financial Assessors who check the claims and evidence before the customer is seen by the PA and there are the Fortnightly Jobsearch review officers who deal with the signing on. All receive different training for their respective jobs all have their own caseloads and appointments diaries for the day. If you had an appointment (anywhere-not just JCP but at the doctors, dentist etc) would you be happy for someone to make your appointment start late because they had not arrived in time for their own and the person you were booked in with saw them first? I was pointing out why the OP was asked to wait until the person HE needed to see was available to see him. He had after all MISSED his own booked slot (which incidentally is 4 minutes to call up the records, check jobsearch and any changes in circumstances, take the signature, update the computer, plus declarations of earnings if made). they were not refusing to see him, just asking him to wait until the person he needed to see was available.0
