BBC Daytime TV: Obsessed with Property and Antiques

Not sure why you quoted me, I mealy said I dont watch daytime tv because there is nothing that interests me
It was just the last bit of your post "to be fair it isn't just BBC" programmes. I just meant that as we pay a licence for BBC, we should get a better choice of programmes. That's all I meant, otherwise what's the point of paying for the same old crap.
Hope that's a bit clearer, I sometimes don't explain myself very well. :beer:0 -

I'm happy to pay just to avoid adverts."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

I am all for keeping the costs down and showing repeats, low budget stuff and the like during the day when most licence payers are at work, but can we at least have a bit of variation in what is offered?
BBC1:
0600-0915: News
0915-1000: Heir Hunters - Find out who inherits a house - PROPERTY
1000-1100: Homes under the Hammer: PROPERTY
1100-1130: Britains Empty Houses: PROPERTY
1130-1215: Cash in the Attic: ANTIQUES
1215-1300: Bargain Hunt: ANTIQUES
1300-1345: News
1345-1415: Doctors
1415-1500: Escape to the Country: PROPERTY
1500-1505: News
1505 onwards: Kids Programs
BBC2:
0600-1200: Kids Programs
1200-1230: Daily Politics
1230-1300: GMT with George Alagiah
1300-1345: Diagnosis Murder
1345-1430: To Buy or not to Buy. PROPERTY
1430-1500: Restoration Roadshow: ANTIQUES
1500-1545: Flog it: ANTIQUES
1545-1630: Helicopter Heroes
1630-1715: Pointless
1715-1800: Put your money where your mouth is. ANTIQUES.
I understand your frustration but these are the sorts of programmes that are ideal for day time TV. They are cheap as hell to make and thus saves money for the primetime when they will get 20 times more viewers for the shows then during the day."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
I think Jeff has hit the nail on the head. Daytime shows have to be cheap, and what's cheaper than having members of the public schlep round a car boot sale? Lucky that there will always be people who want to be on the telly. Personally I wouldn't want to, 10 years from now, be watching myself buying a ceramic cat on some obscure freeview channel.
For quality daytime viewing may I suggest the wonderful 'Hoarders' on Bio channel. It's Sue Sylvester from Glee's favourite show too.0 -
I like the property auction shows because they're always a happy ending and it's interesting to see what people do to the houses to make them more valuable. Some of the car-boot, antique, house-clearance, etc. type programmes can be good fun too - especially when something sells for a lot more (or a lot less!) than estimated.
If I find that there's nothing on then I usually end up watching something I've recorded from the previous nights telly anyway.
Yah I think homes under the hammer is for winners, just to note I plus it - I'm at work during the day. Problem is now I've got two weeks worth to catch up on0 -
Me (OP) again. Thanks for all your views on my vent!
Firstly, thank you for the careers advice, however I do have a job, but do take the occasional day off now and then if that's allowed.
My main complaint is that why can there not be a bit of variety in what they schedule? Surely given their huge archives, they could mix it up a bit so there is a bit of something for most people - for example, a quiz show (a repeat of last nights Eggheads?), a nature documentary, something historical (World at War), a comedy programme, adult education programmes, a repeat of something from the previous evening, etc etc. All equally cheap as yet another makeover programme and infinitely more varied.
Whenever this much sport is shown there is an outcry. And its not as if the day I selected was a one-off. Tomorrows schedules show 11 such property/antiques programmes during the day, with a further 2 in the evening.
And yes, there are other channels I could watch. However (and I did not want to turn this into a vent against the licence fee) as I am forced to pay the licence fee I do believe that I could expect some variation in what my fee funds rather than hour upon hour of the same programmes. I fail to see how endless antiques and property makeover programmes falls under the remit of public service broadcasting. Give me Sky anyday - although it costs me an arm and a leg, at least I watch their programmes.0 -
Oh I see yes I agree
I just said it wasnt just down to BBC commercial tv has bad programs on too ie Loosen women, Jeremy I love myself Kyle (horrible person)It was just the last bit of your post "to be fair it isn't just BBC" programmes. I noticed even BBC radio is getting big cuts, merging stations in afternoon ie Radio York with radio Leeds/Sheffield so much for being local. I heard radio 5 is getting merged too
Well boring night for tv on to a film for me, I record time team though0 -

Couldn't agree more. I'm retired and never watch daytime TV - it's just rubbish. And I don't have Sky.0 -
The programmes are bad but the daytime adverts are worse. It's all, 'Have you had an injury at work?', Wonga.com, and Sky Bingo. Unfortunately, David OP, that's your perceived daytime audience - women, the unemployed, and people who have slipped on a grape at Tesco.0
