Most old drives are known as ide be better if you just but something called a internal disk case(Ebay 5 quid) you can then place the disk inside place the cable to the connection then place it via usb to another computer to recover whats on the drive.

to reiterate, you probably don't need to buy a caddy to get at the data, and if you do, you need the correct one, 3.5" pata/ide or sata, (cheaper on the net than from a shop)
you should be able to plug the hard disk into another pc internally to get the data, without buying anything!!
