Bit of a strange one this.

I have some work on an old Dell pc but the screen broke and the vg (I think this is what it is called) cable broke.
I have tried 2 different monitors but cannot get it to work (the monitors are old ones) the screen the machine came with was a tft flat screen.

If I get another tft screen do you think it will work, is it not working because I am trying monitors that are not tft's. I really need to get this work of the pc. Is there any other way around this?

Any help will be very appreciated.

If you are just after the data, you could put the hard disk in another machine, or buy a usb hard disk caddy for £5 or so.

Your monitor issue isn't very clear, any monitor should work, assuming the pc and video card is working and the monitor is capable of displaying the pc's current resolution, what happens if you plug a screen in and switch on?

Thanks closed, yes it is just the data on a word document and a writing programme. Do you not need to seen the screen though? Hubby is convinced we should just buy another tft monitor, but I don't think we need to.

Sorry closed, just seen your edit, it displayed orange light.
we have several pc's and several monitors, but not every monitor seems to work with every pc, we have tried 3 monitors on the black dell tower and nothing but got the third monitor to work on the other pc tower. (I know very confusing)

Yes I am using a laptop now, but need the work from the black Dell pc (it had a tft screen but cracked)
  • would a HDMI cable not work? You could plug it into your computerr, then into your TV and use the TV as the screen to work from to download your data..
6 debts down - 1 to go: just over £1000 though, soon soon....

does the dell switch on, and go through the motions of a startup? is there more than one vga connector on the back of the dell

if you have multiple pc's you could just take the disk out, and stick it in another pc to get the data assuming the correct connection type sata or pata

If you have tried 3 different monitors and none of them work then the likellihood is that the output from the computer is at fault rather than all three monitors are dead.

Closed is correct - take the hard disc out of the computer and install or attach it to another computer. You can then locate the file and transfer it into Word on another computer.

if you've tried 3 monitors, and 3 cables, I doubt buying a 4th one is going to help, more likely to be graphics card, or software problem, or vga lead
