    you don't need a caddy, you should be able to attach it internally

    take the cover off the dell to see what type of connector it has on the drive

    on a modern dell, there is usually a lever to pull, and the side panel will slide off, but it depends on the model

    then find the hard disk, and look at the data cable.

    wide flat one is ide/pata
    thin one is sata

    Its quite and old model. You lost me at data cable:rotfl: never mind ide and sata. I suppose it will be one of those things you have to see. What do I do with the data cable?

    Most old drives are known as ide be better if you just but something called a internal disk case(Ebay 5 quid) you can then place the disk inside place the cable to the connection then place it via usb to another computer to recover whats on the drive.

    The monitor you use shouldnt matter as long it uses vga which is the cable with the ble bit at each end
