vertical blinds - nice or nasty?

We are planning on trying to move next year and so spending a bit on doing up the house. We thought nice new blinds would look good and help to sell it, as we have a motley assortment of curtains, nets (yuck) etc at the moment.
Had a few people round to quote and they seem to be pushing these vertical (office style) blinds, saying they are cheapest and everyone likes them and you must have them. Thing is, we hate them! (although better than nets). They just look so office-y and apparently you cannot put things on your window sill when you've got them. I was thinking more Venetians - they seem to be in a lot of homestyle magazines. But maybe I'm being silly as after all they're just for selling the house.
But do people like them? Anyone got an opinion?

I agree with you, Annabee! Vertical blinds - yuk! I do think the venetian blinds are nicer, they are certainly more popular, especially in neutral wooden tones - I'd go for those!

I quite liked them when I had them, but if all you want is for selling the house, get some wooden venetian ones. Try Argos, Ikea and other cheap outlets - if your windows are reasonably standard sizes, you'll be able to cut a wooden one down by several inches to fit.0

the house we moved into had those vertical blinds! yuck!! remind me of being in an office- not what you want to come home to!
dont get them!'Children are not things to be moulded, but are people to be unfolded'0 -
we always call houses with vertical blinds 'Office World' !;)0

As has already been said, theyre very officey. Not nice for a home imo."The reasonable man adapts to the world,
The unreasonable man adapts the world to himself,
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."0 -
I am in total agreement, vertical blinds are great………in an office. However you mention that you already have net curtains, are these for privacy or to block out a less attractive view? I would recommend disposing of the nets during viewings as it lets in far more light and rooms will appear brighter and bigger! If you want to restrict the view then consider café curtains in the kitchen. Vertical blinds could be beneficial if you wish to restrict the view out, otherwise they are going to be open – and I imagine pulled away from the window to maximise light.
Personally I prefer roman blinds, which are apparently fairly easy to make (so says the mother in law!) and a pelmet can dress the window up.I came, I saw, I did a little browsing.0 -
tbh im not to keen on verticle blinds on all windows, ive got venitian on all except on my patio doors which has a verticle blind.0

I love vertical blinds. A shop priced my house up at £1200. I went on ebay and gave them seller the measurments. 1 week later i was £100 poorer but had lovely blinds.Keep smiling, G.0
