my kids started to want money at that age and tbh its a lot easier. of course they still get little bits wrapped up. they love going out spending it on things they wouldn't normally be able to afford

Thanks for the reassurance. - off to the bank on Monday for some nice crispy 50's!
I really really would NOT give a teenager crisp £50 notes - for several reasons!

They aren't accepted in all stores.

If he loses one, it's all gone: if it's in £20s and £10s then he can stash them in different pockets and hopefully only lose one at a time.

If he knows he only wants to spend £20, he can take out what he needs (maybe with a spare tenner) rather than a £50.

But actually, what I'd be wanting to do is make sure he had a bank account with a debit card, mine have been with NatWest since the age of 11, and it's much easier to send them off with that rather than with hard cash in their pockets!

By all means get some crispy notes, but not £50 ones!

he has a bank account and a debit card already that his allowance goes into already. I just think £50 notes are more exciting - I remember to this day the thrill of getting my first £20 note (back when that was a big deal!!!) and feel thats the modern equivalent. TBH he'll probably end up shopping online (he's a bargain hunter) and giving me the cash to pay on my bank card!

  • I think it would be nice if you arranged a day for you and him to go out shopping and have a nice meal afterwards, or a trip to the cinema.

My son received mostly money for his 11th birthday recently. He bought an xbox game that turned out to be on offer, a PAYG phone and £10 credit. He has £55 left and doesn't know what to do with it, so I've suggested it goes in his bank account instead.

His birthday outing is a ski lesson at an indoor slope - which is at a retail park so am postponing the lesson til after his birthday rather than the weekend before so we can have a shopping trip at the same time :)
