Giving money as present?

My ds is 13 in a couple of weeks so I asked for a pressie list which has come back mainly trainers and clothes. A couple of ps3 games that his grandparents will get him. I did think he wanted a iPod touch but it seems not so not going to waste my money if he doesn't want it lol. Have got a couple of smaller bits I have chosen for him off list but am wondering whether to give him cash so he can go shopping and gave a splurge. Never given him money before so I know he would be very excited and feel quite grown up but it feels a bit like a cop out on my part. What are peoples thoughts??

I think if he's at the age where most of the stuff he wants is clothes/trainers etc, money is perfectly acceptable as a gift. I usually stop giving pressies and give money instead for birthdays to my nephews/nieces when they reach 11 or 12. My DD isn't at that age yet, but I'd happily take her shopping for clothes etc for her birthday.0

DS has wanted money since he was 8 and I've been happy to give it to him. I get him a few small thingsas a surprise and give him cash, a few of the family do too and he loves it and spreads the spending out over the year.0

I'd let him have money, on the understanding that if he fritters it away on crap then you won't be doing it again.0

I would give money and let him spend it on what he wants.
DD had a party when she was 7 and she got quite a bit money and we let her spend it as she wished, it was her money and when it was spent, that was it.
We were going to give DD money for her 11th birthday in APril but shes decided on a xbox instead. I wouldn't have given her any restrictions on what she could spend it on.0 -
I loved to get money too, mine was tucked into a birthday card, and I was thrilled to receive it. I don't think it's a cop out at all, you'll be rewarded when you see his face light up!0

My boys are 14 and 12. Over the last couple of years they've liked getting money for Christmas and birthdays.
They've got their own savings accounts and put it in there and then when they want things during the year, the money is there to buy them. I did wonder if they'd just spend it on crap within 5 minutes, but they've been really good with it and saved it for things they really want. Here I go again on my own....0
