Of course I understasnd that but, I was making the assertion that a motorist must not can check and ensure their tyres are safe legal.;)

Don't fret, we are both singing the same song, ;);)

But appear to be on different verses. :D
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

So I take it then that you'd have every sympathy with the driver who rolls his car trying to take country lanes at exactly 59.9mph? After all he is "obeying the law" as well.
No, because that would be illegal. People have been prosecuted for careless driving because they were doing 30 in a 30 zone but inappropriately.
The law is an !!! on this one. Once again we're 10-20 years behind the continent, and will eventually be dragged kicking and screaming into line.
So says you and all the sheep, who can't control their speed and drive safely and then spoil it for everyone else because laws need to be changed to stop idiots from driving too fast and hence being unable to stop and then blaming it on their tread depth.
If the government gets its way and increases the speed limit on motorways to 80mph, no doubt the resulting carnage from numpties driving their cars "legally" at 80 in the wet with 1.6mm tyres all around will be blamed on the speed limit.
I'd blame it on people who cannot drive safely.

    "Appropriate speed for the conditions"

What is it about that phrase that you cannot understand?
  • ROSPA recommend to replace tyres at 3.0mm, the limit is 1.6mm. Usually an MOT tester will not issue an advisory notice unless you are around 2.0mm of tread left, leaving you 0.4mm until you hit the limit. Measure 0.4mm and see how much we're talking about! The surface area of your tyre in contact with the road at any given time (assuming they are properly inflated) is about the size of the palm of your hand. The ability of your tyres to disperse water, which is what the pretty patterns of the tyre tread is for, is severley reduced the lower the tyre gets, thus reducing grip and increasing your chances of an accident. Save your pennies and deal with it within the month, better than 3 points per tyre and up to £1000 fine isn't it?
  • My wife just got an MOT on her Volvo. It passed with advisories that: Rear Pads were getting low; Front pads were getting low; Front discs were wearing thin. Of course they advised the repairs for the about £350.

Not wishing to be caught in a position of having no choice I took the car to ATS for an alternative quote. They took off all the wheels, measured all the pads and measured the front discs with a micrometer. They advised that the front pads would need changing in about 4000 miles which is fair enough but they said the rear pads had at least 15000 miles in them and there was nothing at all wrong with the discs. They declined to quote for the work because it would be dishonest. At this stage they had no idea who did the MOT though I told them afterwards.

What should I do about it?

You could start a new thread. ;)

It is a bit pointless dragging up a six month old thread. :)

    The MOT regs state 1.6mm.

    Perfectly accepatble in the dry.

When the tyres approach 0.0mm they get even better in the dry, slick territory.

In my view the 3mm advice is only for loons who dry as morons in poor weather conditions, (unfortunately there are toooo many about, so the law has to allow for them)

There is a safety factor included here to negate the idiot factor, ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Advisories are exactly that.. a testers opinion of what may need attention before the next mot.

Unfortuantely, the MOT tester can not take the wheels off to measure anything, so its all visual and done by feel. So the tester wouldn't have actual measurements.
