I hit one in similar circumstances on the A1 late last year.

the Traumatic bit (for me!) was the bird (pheasant) got embedded in the grill, and was like the roadrunner, stuck in my grill of my car, head sticking out one end, feet the other. I knew it was stuck somewhere as feathers kept flying up over the car, although i could not actually see the bird until I stopped and got out of course.

I pulled over on the A1, somewhere south of York, at a HMRC weighing station or something for trucks, and got a copper to pull it out.

I had rang my boss, a hotel manager, and he sympathetically suggested I put it in the boot and Chef could cook it for dinner. I didnt take him up on suggestion, and declined the offer of anything other than a vegetarian dinner that night!

    Must be that road.
I hit one, in the middle of the windscreen, the glass didn't shatter, but the bird did. Burst all over the screen, then smeared up and back over the roof.
The wipers got most of it off, but I had to take it through a car wash later, as it was just unpleasant around the edges, and across the top of the car.

This happened to me last year. A seagull smashed my wing mirror at 70(!) mph on the M5. It cost £220 to replace. Since my insurance excess was £250 I just paid for it myself. It never ocurred to me to report it to anyone.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

Yep, you must report it to the police if the accident involves a dog but I also believe that larger farm animals are included in this also, goats, sheep, cows (ouch) and of course horses. Not sure if pigs would be included but then they're not often seen wandering across a road. :)

You have to report cows??surely thats Bullocks?:p
counting down the time I got left.:beer:

Is deer perhaps another animal you need to report?

If you hit a deer keep quiet, report that you've hit a deer and you will get a fine ! is because they are protected by law and are "technically" the queens property like swans are too.

One of my ode mans work collegues hit a deer once in his van - wrecked the van, killed the deer reported the accident police attended and promply gave him a fixed penalty for hitting the deer.

As for picking up roadkill, I believe if another car hits it and stops to pick it up then they can get done for poaching, but if you stop after another car has hit it then its not poaching as you have not killed it. I pick loads of pheasants - partridge - hares and rabbits up never had any problems, we eat it as do our dogs cats and ferrets sofree food for us all.

There was a time once I was driving down a country road when a woman comes speeding round a bend in the opposite direction. when she saw me she slammed on her brakes to slow down while I wound my window down and called out 'MAD COW!' to which she yelled 'WA**KER!' Next day on the news I heard 'Woman hurt in car crash with stampeeding friesian which had escaped from it's field. I thought to myself; "I did try and warn her"...

    Relax and forget about it.

    Life's too short.

and even shorter for the bird.

If it was a pheasant it might be worth going back for it in a couple of weeks once it's nice and gamey.
