Hi OP, I've never been in your situation so I can't help but I wanted to say good luck with whatever you choose to do. It sounds like you've tried hard to make it work without any reciprocal effort. I don't think staying together for the sake of your children is a good idea - they can sense when things are wrong and the atmosphere in the house would be horrible. Plus you deserve a life too, and I've been in a relationship like that before and it's the loneliest existence imaginable, much more lonely than actually being alone.
I'm not sure about the practicalities of a mortgage, etc. Maybe other people will be able to tell you. Whose name is the house in? Start looking on sites like Rightmove for rental properties and see how much money you would need for a deposit. I would advise having enough for a deposit and the first few months' rent so that if/when you do leave, you at least have a few months without worrying about paying the rent.
Good luck and please let us know how you get on!0 -
Others beat me to it but I will say it again: could he be depressed? Has he ever sought help for his own behaviour (drinking, gambling, depression etc)?
You can hardly blame others for judging you so quickly when you said nothing about his gambling and drinking in your original post; you only added that info once you realised others might be getting it wrong. Is there anything else you need to add so that people can advise you effectively?0 -
