I did it. I was having a blonde moment (and I'm not even blonde). I used Zonealarm on my old pc for years and found it great.

Oh I can't be bothered with tutorials. It's up and running now so far with no problems just the odd alert and permission seeking at first. :T I meant to download it when I bought the pc the other week but after getting Spybot and AVG I was bored and forgot to do it. I have had the XP firewall turned on since day one so I was just being lazy!!!

  • Just thought I would mention that AVG gave me a trojan...

When I came to the end of my free trail I got a pop up to say 'do you want to upgrade' to the full version. I clicked no, and my antivirus immediately detected a trojan attached to the AVG setup exe. My antivirus could not quaranteen it so it was deleted, within seconds it reported another 2 incidences of the trojan, which had infected my last 2 restore point files and both those had to be deleted. Of course the rest of AVG could not be uninstalled as the initial file was deleted by my antivirus.

Probably an AVG scam to get you to buy the full version. Thanks AVG...

In case people aren't aware you can get an excellent free office suite with programs compatible with Microsoft at

    https://www.openoffice.org

Well worth a look, totally free to download and use; sponsored by Sun Microsystems

  • Good article MSE! But I'm trying to kit out my small business legitimitely and would like to know what's the cheapest way? The quote below reckons Active Virus Shield is free for businesses, could this be true?!!

    Toby
I would recommend Active Virus Shield:

    http://www.activevirusshield.com/

This is a free version of Kaspersky Antivirus and it seems to be more comprehensive than AVG as it will also detect and remove at least some spyware that AVG ignores. The other major difference is that, as far as I can see, it is it is free to all users, not just non-commercial users.

People may be suspicious that you must submit an email address but I have used Active Virus Shield for several months without receiving any junk emails (you have an opt-out).

hi smarty29a - firstly it is RUDE to use ALL CAPS on a forum, it is like shouting ..... And some people like the Thanks button pressing - not in advance ... :p

People in advance have answered your question see stickies at top of THIS forum...

I just read Martin's article - as a few people have reported getting exaggerated reports of spyware, in an effort to sell a spyware removal product......

Anyway most browsers now have pop-up stoppers built in.
No mention of Spybot esp with it's Immunization(sic) feature which will add nearly 10,000 bad addresses to the restricted zone, i.e. if you can't visited a bad site you will not get infected... Google has a similiar inbuilt feature on its search results..

    so ..

    Have you updated Windows ?

What security do you have on your new pc ?
    A firewall ?
    Windows Defender ?
Spybot with the Immunisation set ?
Adware for the occassional scan for spyware
    Anti-virus - with live scanner ?

The above are free and will not produce false negatives or exaggerated issues about a cookie .... and will help keep you safe while on-line .....

Now you just have to back up your data, stored away from the pc; ensure your disk is healthy; power supply stable; that your O/S recovery procedure is working and written down somewhere; use a non admin account; password protect all your admin accounts; your locks and doors are to Security Standard; don't read spam; .......

whoooo :j hoooo my 700th post ...
