PLEASE HELP?! My computer has already got a virus or something which is preventing me from even downloading my new Norton 360!! I can only find places (including Norton!) that charge to get rid of the culprit (whatever it is) - Costs IRO £70, which, at the moment I just can not afford! Does anyone know of any 'freebie' that could help me? Thanks

  • Hi all,

I use a fantastic and very thorough online scanner called BitDefender.

Look for the Scan Online button and its completely free and updates everytime you use it.

This one quite often seems to find something the others miss, because it runs using ActiveX over the internet it is less likely to be recognised by any clever virus's hiding from your regular scanner. You do need to run it in Internet Explorer though.

*note* i use AVG as standard and Spybot: Search and Destroy both of which are reputable, fully updated and most importantly FREE!!

    Hope this helps!

  • I don't know where to start with virus protection. At the moment I have aNorton subsciption which is due to run out in 14 days. can i download free protection whilst this is still running? Do they all give the same protection? Will it give my computer protection against things sent through or( I think its called MSN) my children chatting on Bebo? Will it give protection if photgraphs are sent from one computer to another? Will I get messages sent on when to down load more? Any basic advice helpfull as the more I read the more confusing some of it gets. If any one knows of any site which explains all this stuff for beginners would be also helpful.
  • Hi Sleary

Its a good idea to download all the software you will need now.i.e antivirus software, a firewall, and spyware client as a minimum. The following site gives loads of advice on all the free stuff you can use, how up to date it is i dont know. When you uninstall norton you need to google a special norton remover tool to ensure its completely gone. you should also notice an improvement in speed on your pooter, because norton is a resource hog.
remember to turn of windows firewall if you install another one.
hth for now, there are more experienced people likely to help you as well on here.

You can download by way of "Save" to your computer, any security software you want, just do not install another AV whilst you already have one running. You will need to uninstall Norton before installing another AV or you stand a good chance of a conflict.
Do they all give the same protection?
Amongst the most recommended, there is not a vast amount of difference between the protection levels, with regards to detection, though individual features can vary a little. Best of the free ones seem to be AntiVir PE, AVG, and Avast (I have run Avast for a few years now, and am happy with it)
Will it give my computer protection against things sent through or( I think its called MSN) my children chatting on Bebo?
Avast has an Instant messenger module, am sure others do too.
You will find a lot of help on this forum regards security programs.
