Free Anti-Virus, it's got to be AVG.0

From january you have to pay for avg , so thats a non starter.
Currently I am using avast , seen no problems as of yet , and im a new adopter forming from avgfree which was great for costing nowt.
Theres more to this though martin , not just an individual piece of software liek a virus killer , theres open office as an alternative to microsoft office , theres firefox for a browser ....hell why not go the whole hog and get a new free operating system like ubuntu.
Update , it seems that theres differing messages about the demise of avgfree , according to its own site it NOW states that 7.1 will die on 15th jan and the new version will take its place of 7.5 which now has an option to install avgfree 7.5 variant.
Downloading 7.5 to install just now.0 -

see http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/11/21/avg_stays_free/ for avg.
prefer avast but don't want people to panic
would have thought spybot would have been on the freebie list too. unless i am blind.Ever stop to think and forget to start again?0 -
AVG subtle sales technique
If you have had the on screen warning that AVG 7.0 or 7.1 are going in January - its true and they are being replaced by 7.5 which is what is now available. THe confusing bit is that when you follow the link the indication is that you need to buy 7.5 but look carefully and you will see in the small print - you can download the free version if ou want it fee.John0 -

Yep, I got caught out with that. Switched the computer on one morining and up came a box saying AVG Free 7.1 will die on 15 jan 07. With a large button that let me to the paid version of AVG 7.5.
My immediate reaction was to post on here to let other people know, and to ask for and alternatives. Instantly I got messages saying "read the small print" AVG 7.5 FREE is still available. But you had to dig deep to find it.
IMO this was just a marketing ploy to try and fool some unsuspecting users into buying the AVG before they realised it was still available as the free version.
I was a bit embaressed at falling for it, but very grateful for the people in here who were quick to point it out, and save me money.0 -
I've got AVG, Spybot S&D and Sunbelt Kerio fire wall.
I was a bit confused by the firewall, since it said it would expire soon and I'd have to buy a licence. Turns out that some features just don't work anymore once the introductory period has finished, but it still functions as a firewall.Happy chappy0 -
I think it's worth mentioning that people can save a lot of money on home office software by downloading OpenOffice.org too.
Microsoft Office is universally expensive, but almost a requirement for all users wanting to create documents, presentations and spreadsheets. However, OpenOffice.org provides a free alternative to this which has many of the same functions and is entirely compatible with MS Office formatted documents - even allowing you to save in MS Office formats for those that haven't converted yet.
