Nothing much can be done, but even so an engine misses one (time-based) service and then lets go? Seems very unlucky to me.

    Thank you all.

They did offer her a trade in (up) its on their finance, a while ago.

She would get a bigger car (basic Fiesta) & loose her last two years payments & start again with another 4 years finance, but her monthly repayments staying the same.

Do you think they will still offer that?
Would it be a good deal?

She's just bought her first home, is pregnant, working for the NHS with the threat of redundancy hanging over her & now her car could cost her a load of money when she thought buying brand new would at least get her trouble free motoring.

Its really not acceptable to have such major trouble after only 11,000 miles. Thats only an average years driving.

they wont offer the same on p/x if the car has engine problems, they will factor how much it will cost to repair and deduct that from the p/x value. Even though they are a ford dealer it still wont be a warranty repair for them, the dealer will have to stand the cost.
They will however be able to do the repair at a cheaper rate than a retail customer would pay. It might be the best option to go talk to the dealer, explain all and see if they can do a deal where her payments stay the same, this could mean increasing the term to more than 2 years, but atleast she wont be having to stump up the money in one go.
warranties are always mileage/time related, which ever comes first as stated in the agreement, i cant comment on a ka, but i bought a new transit and that was 1 year or 15000 between services, Even if a car was doing 500 miles a year it would still need to be serviced to keep the warranty valid

No, the one & only service was at 11k miles & 23 months old.

Ford warranties require you to service the car at 12,500 miles or every year, whichever is sooner.

You don't have to get it serviced at a Ford garage - it's illegal for them to require you do to this. But you do need to get it serviced!

The lack of servicing is likely what's caused this fault.

If a Ford dealer then full repaired and serviced the car would they be able to reinstate the warranty for subsequent owners?

Did she check the dipstick regularly like you are supposed to? Really once a week is recommended at the same time as checking the tyres and bulbs but once a month is almost adequate if your not that interested, but never doing it is asking for big, expensive trouble no matter how new the car or how expensive can survive without proper basic maintenance. My gran is a bad one for it, I always make a point of doing it for her because before she would wait on the oil light to come on before doing anything about it.

Not the manufacturers warranty but they could warranty it themselves or buy a third party warranty.

As regards to the offer they've made you - the cost per month is totally irrelevant, I still can't understand why people base buying decisions on this number.

To understand if it's a good deal you need to know:
How much they are paying for the Ka (the part-ex)
How much your DD is paying for the new car
What apr they are charging on the finance

I suspect that when you have the above it will very quickly become apparent that it is a terrible deal that will cost your DD alot more than £1k.

Get the car repaired, make sure from now on she gets it regularly serviced and tell her to keep the car for at least 5yrs so that the effect of having a dubious service history becomes irrelevant.

    An expensive lesson to learn.

ps. I check the oil level (amoungst other things) on our cars monthly - you should encourage her to do the same.

Why didn't she have it serviced?
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark
