Dip fir cones in some wallpaper paste then dip in soap power to make them look snow covered. Use florists ribbon to make big bows with long ends and staple christmas cards to the ends.

Florists have wire bases for wreaths, they don't cost much and can be wrapped in florists ribbon then a cheap floral "pick" - or candle ring - can be added to make wall hangers.

Two wire coat hangers can be shaped into a kissing ring and wrapped with tinsel. Instead of buying an expensive door wreath collect a bunch of greenery and tie it with a big ribbon and hang in on the door.

A hula hoop wrapped in ribbon with three candle rings attached makes a very elegant wall decoration.

I'm lucky, but you could accost a tree owner !! I have a Contorted Hazel - its the wiggly twigs that cost a fortune in shops, when we prune the tree I keep the long twigs and spray gold/silver or white (depends on my color theme !) and put in a tall glass vase (Ikea) with glass beads and marbles (from car boots in summer) and decorate with baubles (cheap from Poundstrecher - £1 for 12 last chrissy)
For a Door Wreath, i cut branches of holly (very berried this year), long cuts off a kind neighbors leylandaii jungle, some evergreen (whatever i can find) a few wiggly gold twigs and tie well into a bouquet/bunch. Add a gold ribbon and tie into a big bow, and hang (upsidedown) by the front door - yes it does take a bit of time, but it is only a nice walk on a sunday afternoon in a local woods ..I understand not everyone has woods/countryside close by, but for those who do, its a huge free shop of fantastic things.

The same woods provide an assortment of pine cones in different sizes which are used as decs, the smaller ones and the ones chewed by squrrels make great kindling for our woodburner :)
What goes around - comes around
give lots and you will always recieve lots
  • You could decorate your tree with keyrings to add a bit of novelty, rather than just the usual Christmas baubles, good for the kids as you can play hunt the keyring too.
  • Someone in our local area has found a way to increase the amount of lights they put up on their house by stealing ours!! Got home this evening to find about 10 icicle lights left out of about 160, thanks guys hope you have a really great christmas! Only purchased them on Saturday!!!

We have loads of holly and Ivy in the garden. Unfortunatly the holly never has berries but I mix in some sprigs of red berried cotoneaster and that does the trick. As for Ivy - wow. Paint round the edges of leaves with white paint, shoe white or snopake and sprinkle with glitter. You don't have to paint every leaf and if you do it over newspaper you can keep scooping up the glitter and sprinkle again. I have really long lengths of Ivy which can go right across fire place and dangle down both sides, same with big bookcase, but you can tie short lengths together. Final touch - home made red velvet stockings ( made from an old dress) and decorated with old glass beads and gold or pearl buttons from the button box. I hang two on each side of fireplace.

I have heaps of Ivy and you have inspired me to make a garland for the fireplace - off to the craft shop now for some glue and paint. Thanks x
