Spent about a tenner on groceries last week - honest guv
and this week so far its £4.50 on fruit, sack of spuds £4 which will last a couple of months, plus porridge oats and bread flour. Im trying to avoid supermarket shopping until after xmas - i have saved loads like this already, running down what I have in the freezer and in the cupboard. This is for 1 adult 3 kids.

SSaver you're doing so well - Don't feel guilty your doing it cos of them. I bet they don't miss these things after a while.
Choccy & crisps are rationed in our house but the fruit bowl can be dibbed into at anytime. The kids love not having to grovel (I mean ask) ;D so choose fruit more often than not. Stopped buying twix 'n' stuff for school tuck and replaced with a clutch of economy plain biscuits in cling wrap and they havn't said a word. Grandad bought some mars 'n' stuff last week which are still in the cupboard cos they are into economy bourbons at the min. Stopped buying pop months ago (even though we only had cheapo) and they havn't complained either.Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0 -
Well done Ssaver! I love it when I make myself live off what is in the larder/freezer, I like a challenge but easier for me as kids grown up so don't get the pester pressure! I was a bit of a money waster in those days purely for a quieter life ::) I did do a lot of home baking but then we did enjoy that.
Your children will be all the better for it, there are far too many additives in the kinds of foods the kids demand. Also when they are grown up they will remember (fondly) making cookies with Mummy! Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

Like MATH I've always restricted goodies in our house (bit more difficult for son as he works part-time now and buys his own!) but they are allowed fruit at any time.
Last week a friend brought round a carrier bag full to the brim with biscuits as her son works as the biscuit factory. Didn't cost us anything as it was her way of repaying a favour. I must admit I thought they would be dived on and gobbled up - most of them are still there! They've got that used to eating fruit instead of biscuits that after a couple of biscuits they've had enough! ;DMink0 -
my kids are right off biscuits too, i won a tin of some choc ones, and only 2 have been eaten.
and they were by me. :-[

I'm new to this site and have spent all morning reading through this thread. I have read other thrifty tips before but this thread has been really useful.
We are struggling financially due to bad judgements and bad money management and now really have to cut back. The thing we spend the most on is shopping, over £100 a week for 2 adults and 2 kids. I now realise that was way over the top and this last week I have started to shop as most of you do on this thread. Not found many bargains yet as I dont seem to be able to shop when all the stuff is reduced but I bought loads of fruit and veg and meat for 7 meals for £25 which I never would have thought possible before I started reading these forums.
A new tip to me was buying potatoes by the sack, its just not something I have ever done, but I will do from now on. I was wondering though, do they sell different varieties by the sack? My husbands family are Irish and he only likes floury potatoes (Irish potatoes are like this) as opposed to waxy potatoes! I must admit I have grown to prefer them too.
Going back to the Sainsburys thing when you buy reduced items that are BOGOF and they end up paying you to take it away. I noticed 160 said they have stopped this now. Is this the same all over the country? What about other supermarkets? I used to work in Sainsburys, but failed to realise the need to buy LOTS of the item in order to benefit! DUh.
Anyway, thanks for the tips, keep them coming“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0
