Help - please

Firstly my son had the message NTLDR is missing

So I read thorough posts and copied Ubuntu on to a disc

GREAT - or so I thought - laptop worked again, got on the internet and everything.

Went into places and all documents still there.

Unfortunately as soon as we took the disc out computer would not boot again - so assumed we had to install it.

Kids - never satisfied wants Windows XP working again

Tried the reboot disc and recovery disc - but keep getting

ERROR 1826
FREE SPACE NOT FOUND

As I cant figure out how to uninstall Ubuntu, I uninstall lots of the software that came with it - but no joy - still no space

Anyone any ideas how I can free up disc space or uninstall then try the windows discs again?

At least we know the computer is not dead and will work with the other system

Thanks in advance:)

    Hi,

Took me ages to find it - but cant work out how to paste it on

But it just say unallocated 27.95GiB across the top where you show the three
    sections

and again where the list is underneath.

But I take it that I am now stuck with with

Tried downloading ccleaner but it only works with windows

Also don't know if I have any firewall, anti virus etc

Surely there must be a way of uninstalling this

The idea of booting off the Ubuntu CD was to access your data and recover it.
Installing it onto the hard drive may have mangled your original corrupted XP install even more. If so, uninstalling Ubuntu will not magically repair XP.
Assuming you have recovered the data, do a clean install of XP.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    I now realise that

But cant get the XP recovery disk to work, comes up with Error 1826 -
    not enough space

which is why I was trying to uninstall Ubuntu_pale_

You need to borrow a copy of XP Home then.

If you have installed Ubuntu as you say you cannot just have a single unallocated partition. If you use the drop down menu (top right of GParted) is it showing 2 disks, sda and sdb?

it is just showing sda - no drop down menu

cant get a screen shot sorted

seems like I will just have to learn to live with Ubuntu

Is there a way of doing a disk clean up or removing old programmes from windows to give me more space, the same as I used to use Ccleaner?

    Thanks

  • BTW one of the benfits of using Ubuntu is you don't need to worry about Anti Virus and firewall if you are behind a router.

I don't think the OP wants to hear the benefits of Ubuntu, but would like to get Windows XP working again on their child's computer.

From what I gather, you've done one of two things:

    1) You're running Ubuntu from a disc, rather than saving it on the hard drive.
    OR
    2) You've installed Ubuntu onto the hard drive, potentially overwriting the Windows XP installation, or hopefully, not.

If you remove the Ubuntu disk from the computer and restart, what happens? Does it repeat "NTLDR is missing", or does it load Ubuntu?
