Kenwood Chef - Old or New?

Hi

I have finally decided to buy a Kenwood Chef., I am prepared to buy a new one as I just received some inheritance but I am wondering if the older models are better - eg the 900 series?

If I buy a new one, which model would you say is better,? I am currently looking at the 800w one in argos with a glass liquidiser I beleive this is a KMC550 model. I could be wrong though.

Also, do the older attahments available on ebay etc fit the new models?

I am currently dithering over this decision as it is a lot of money.

Many thank

Jo

    Hiya :)

They'll take some reading but the two threads listed below have quite a bit of comment and discussion about the various models currently available one way or another, so perhaps they'll be of help.

  • Hi Jo,

We recently bought (briefly )the KMC550 from Argos. When we got it home there was no blender attachment with it. When we took it back we were told by the bod at the desk that the item description is wrong, the blender is not included ....but it's OK because, apparently, Argos is allowed to have up to 10% errors in it's catalogue??!!

This was a couple of months ago, maybe the blenders are now included, but it might be wise to check if this is what you decide to go for.
  • My Kenwood caught fire a couple of weeks ago!!! It was old - about 25 or 30 years old, and as I couldn't live without one I bought a new one last weekend. It is a silver metal one, model km001 and I must say that I am very pleased with it. It had a glass liquidiser and a food processor with it - the k beater thingy is stainless steel and rather posh compared to my old one.

Go for it, I couldn't manage without mine - they are expensive, but worth every penny. We nearly bought the km550, but decided to fork out the extra money because we only buy one every 25 years or so!

I have a KM001 (the silver one), it's about 2yrs old and is ace.

My ma has a 701 series (I think), it's about (cough) 36yrs old (wedding pressie b4 I was born), it's ace.

If you buy a 2nd hand one, ensure it has the bowl you want it to have .. when I was 15 I broke my ma's ceramic bowl and it was replaced by a plastic one which is nowhere near as good (fortuitously, 20yrs later I have begged forgiveness by sourcing a replacement ceramic bowl ... that's how serious it was!)

I guess it depends on the things you want to do with it .... my ma has the mincer / blender etc ....

Mine has a food processor attachment, and I could have a pasta maker / ice cream maker if I so desired ...

There is a lady on here who knows all there is to know .. hopefully she will pop along soon and help you!

However, I love my KC ... I use it several times a week, from making cakes, bread to liquidising stuff .....

Whatever you do ... find a place for it in the kitchen .... it deserves it!

    HI,

Thanks for letting me know that, I had just decided to go for that one and have just ordered it from Argos, but I think I may cancel and go for the KM001 as I was also pondering over this ome. I had thought about an old model but having seen the price they go for on ebay I think I may have a new one.

The KM001 package with the processor - is the processor worth it? I may go for this as then I can get rid of my very old braun multipractic which is falling apart now each time I use it!

Having mixed by hand a huge batch of cookies today I feel I really could do with the kenwood chef - right now!!!!

I also have a bread maker and may also get rid of this if the KW is good for this.

Also thinking I should wait for the sales, but really want one now.

    Thanks

    Jo

I can't comment on the processor but I ditched my breadmaker and now use my KW for making the dough. It's nice to have bread without paddle holes :D

The processor seemed like a good idea at the time .. but I've only used it twice since I've owned it ... .don't own another food processor either.

    Sorry ....

I got my Kenwood Chef 900 series from a car boot for £5 (including mincer, shredders and liquidiser!). It is absolutely fantastic. If it broke down today and I couldn't replace with a second hand one I'd have to save up for a new one.

That said, I don't make bread in it - I use the breadmaker (I can put in the ingredients and forget about it) and I have never used the liquidiser (I have a nifty little stick blender).

We have not bought any butter since we got it earlier this year. We make our own using cream and use the butter milk for scones (also made in the kenwood) or Irish Soda bread.
Enjoying an MSE OS life :D
