Tenancy notice

Can anybody help please?
I have been in my rented property since September 2008 and it was always my understanding that I had to give 1 months notice to terminate my tenancy.
My original contract ended in October 2009 (of which I never received a copy) and have never been sent a new one to sign since.
I have given notice to terminate my tenancy on 28th Feb to leave on 1st april and understand that I will owe at least 1 extra weeks rent.
They are now telling me that I have to give 1 months notice from my rent due date (ie 26th monthly) so I can't leave till 25th April.
Is this correct? They are holding a deposit and I can't afford to lose that.

WHo is telling you? Its typical landlord scum behaviour to grab your money as much as possible. They dont care about anything but their next holiday in the bahamas. Good luckI am not a financial expert, and the post above is merely my opinion.:j0

Yes, they are correct, you should have given notice on 25/26th February to leave on 26th March and maybe negotiate an extra week's stay till 1st April. Sorry, but that is the law.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

Taking money off someone due to a technicality shows low morals. WHich is consistant with 99% of landlordsI am not a financial expert, and the post above is merely my opinion.:j0 -

Assuming you pay monthly (not weekly or...) and in Eng/Wales, it is one month from your next rent due date.
If you pay rent on the 26th, then your month starts on 26th March and your tenancy ends on 25th April. Of course you can leave whenevr you wish, but unless the landlord agrees otherwise, your rent is payable till then.
Try to negotiate and early surrender. If the LL finds a tenant to replace you before 25th April, he cannot charge 2 lots of rent!
ps - ignore the comment form the *** above. Either you reach a mutual agreement with the LL, or you abide by the law. In the same way that the LL would have to abide by the law if he wanted to evict you.0 -

What do you think the technicality is. SUrely you realise my point even if you dont agree with it. No need to ask a leading question so you can slam dunk my answer with your punch line. Get a grip.I am not a financial expert, and the post above is merely my opinion.:j0 -
Perhaps that I have no contract and therefore was not aware of this?0
