Not sure why they are issuing devices totally different to the ones used on their business accounts rather than just expanding those to personal accounts.
Probably cost. From what's been described above about the business device, it sounds like SecurID which is expensive (£30 to £60 each depending on quantity I believe) and they expire after three years. However, the big advantage of SecurID is that you can use the same device to authenticate to multiple companies. Each company just needs the SecurID's serial number.

I hope we can opt out of this as it's unnecessary for people who don't respond to phishing emails and are very careful with their logon credentials.
  • If it replaces the current IB-no & logon details then I'm fine with it, as it's probably less hassle just to read a 4-digit number off screen, bang this into your wallet, enter the result into a text-box on screen & away you go.

Yeah, that's probably less hassle than the current setup, but if this is added on-top of the current arrangements, then it'll be simply be an extra annoyance..

..which will add an extra layer of security..

    Gah. :<

Hmm.. it physically looks like a Digipass 270.

They already issue Vasco OTP tokens for business banking, so it would make sense if this new device as also a Vasco.
  • I guess they are more secure as only one should be linked per account, meaning no one else can get in...

BUT what if you lose it? You won't be able to gain access again till you get a new one and you won't be able to borrow another one from someone else.

I get the idea, I use one for PayPal for my own security but I prefer the RBS/NatWest approach - You only have to (at present anyways) use a card reader to set up a new payee and make the first payment and they are not required after this.

Can't see what is wrong with the way RBS/NatWest do this? At the worse people can only see your statement information and mine is really interesting - Just a load of bills, ASDA, Tesco or Sainsburys listed... More going out than in... Same as a lot of others! :D

Oh dear, it is needed to actually log in to internet banking (not just for transactions).

I can see this key-thing and the account ending up in the bin, which is a shame as I've been quite pleased with HSBC.

It really is rubbish - something else to add to my large collection of card readers - at least with card readers they all seem to work the same - hoe many of these secureid devices am I am going to have to carry round - and imagine you are away on business or holiday and lose it - bye bye to accessing your banking for a few weeks. Yes it protects the banks, doesn't do anything for the customers tho :(
    I think....
  • Just like everything - it will be secure for so long till some smart person comes along and finds a way of cracking it.. No doubt they will find a number generator that overcome this.

Then, who knows - have to find something else..

I thought it was secure enough, if they wan't to gain access to someones bank account and are determined to do so - they will do it at any cost to get in.

    Hardly.

RSA SecureID has been around for years and has not yet been cracked.

I have complete confidence in security tokens.

I have 1 account with Nationwide + 1 with Barclays. I use the Nationwide card reader to log in on both sets of accounts. The Barclays reader sits unused in a draw.

If I had an HSBC account I would need yet another device. It would be useful if these also doubled-up as a calculator. Make them more user-friendly.
