Surely you meant that as they are "public highways", then everybody has the right to park there. (restrictions permitting)

Not sure that anyone has a "right" to park.

    Who says so?

Well.... I've got a whole street full of people parking next to the dropped kerbs in front of their property.

If someone is using the road legally, they must have the same rights as every other legal road user, (not counting drivers such as the emergency services as they have some additional rights) and this would include being able to park anywhere where it is permitted to do so.

I live near a town centre, but I don't work in the town. So you're saying that people who live near town centres, should a) work in the town centre and b) never travel anywhere by car.

So I move out to the suburbs instead, so I have to use my car if I want to go *anywhere*, thus massively increasing congestion. Nice one.

I have in the back of my mind a half remembered article about the purpose of highways was to aid transport and in that sense there was no "right to park"

But I take on board what you have posted.

Reminds me of the people in the block of flats behind my house, a couple there bought a flat without a parking space so "adopted" the visitors space and removed the little metal plate with a V on it aswell.

This never bothered me as I have my own space right by my back door, aswell as space round the front of the house, I only park round the back occasionally, lately the cheeky sods have been using both spaces by parking across them both so that they can keep a space for their visitors!

That was taking the !!!!, after all they were stupid enough tho buy the cheapest flat without a space and they now want to take over a space that somebody has marked in the deeds to their house!

As far as the OP goes, you have done nothing wrong, she is just being a nimby, does she think the space will be empty all day?

I used to enjoy pushing the stolen cones out the way in the Ambulance though.

Is it likely the "owner" of the space will do anything about it? Stick in a metal pole for example?

Oooh parking is a very touchy subject. I live in a terraced house near a town centre and as the parking costs go up. People start creeping into the nearest residential street. Where I live there is plenty of town centre parking, good rail and bus links but people want to drive in their cars, on their own, into work - no car sharing and no taking public transport. I'm disabled and I must admit that it really cheeses me off if I come home and there is someone parked outside my house. Absolutely everyone in the street feels exactly the same. They all have their personal spot. Twenty-five years ago when I bought the house parking in the street was no problem but now most families have two or even three cars per house. I don't know what the answer is. But to the person who says move out of town and buy a house with a driveway don't you think that that might be a tad more expensive than a terrace house. They don't go up that much in value just because you live near a town centre.

You weren't being unreasonable at all, it sounds like you were quite patient.

She was being unreasonable for giving you an earful in the street. As others have said, it's a public road, so it's first come, first served. If this silly woman really wanted to stop you parking there, she could have left her car there and got public transport instead.

If you are fortunate enough to return to your car just as she shows up wanting her space, simply go through the same "slo-mo" procedure she did for you, only take 20 minutes this time!

I'd say, get a taxi home and see how she likes not having "her space" overnight. :D
