Just to let people know I have just managed to get my son some car insurance, its with co-op young drivers, he has to have a smart box fitted in the car for a year but its well worth it, he bought a v reg corsa, year 2000, 1 litre, and the insurance was £1050....still a lot but not compared to most quotes we were given. Just thought it may help someone.0

It's worth clarifying as well that they are very reasonable in the event of a claim, on the whole. Speaking from personal experience (unfortunately!) and as a 22 year old male! :money:0 -

Until a couple of years ago Bell did a policy whereby you could get the 'drive other cars' extension for about £30, even at 17. Shame I missed out on that one.Though I think people were taking the mickey and insuring a 1.0 corsa or something, then driving 'their dad's' Impreza all the time.

how do we go about getting a 'kitcar"?
A good starting point is to look at the Kit Car magazines (there's a couple of them published each month) and they're stocked in most of the big supermarkets or places like WHSmith. The next big car show for them is at Newark (http://www.kitcarshow.co.uk/) where you'll see thousands of kitcars all in one place.
Or you could look online. Here's one of their sites: http://www.completekitcar.co.uk.
These mags also list carry adverts for the specialist insurers that cover them (although the best deals are usually for members in the relevant owner's club). In my case the members' insurance deal covers four models of car, every postcode and every engine combination for a single price. It's a condition of the deal that the details aren't given to non club members so I can't give more detail on my car. I will say though that my very fast convertible kitcar is insured for less than my 1.4 diesel Citroen C3...
There's a real variation in kitcar models so it's important to do some research into what you need (and fancy driving).
Many kit cars are of the Lotus 7 variety which is fun but cramped (and no good if you need to carry more than 2!) but there are other styles of car too if you're prepared to hunt a little harder.
For example at the National KitCar show over the last bank holiday weekend I took a ride in a Dakar on Stoneleigh's off-road course. It's based on a dead Land Rover Discovery so it's pretty impressive off road!
But if you need something with room for four you could do a lot worse than take a look at something like a Quantum coupe, a Beauford or an NCF Diamond. All very different in styling but based on cheap Ford parts.
I'd be amazed if you couldn't find something you like AND insure it for much less than something 'conventional'.0 -

re the above post.
Can you give a few more details, I'd like to know which insurer gave a new teenage driver a policy for 300, and why did the insurer cancel the policy?0
