I got quotes through all the usual comparison sites for my 20 year old daughter to drive my car on occasions when she is home from University. She wouldn't be driving it very often however as I need it and would be the main driver of course. Direct Line came back with a reasonable quote considering her age, she has been driving for 3 years, but with a total excess for her of £550! I phoned Direct Line to arrange the insurance but was refused point blank to do it in my name even though I would DEFINITELY be the main driver and I own the car! I was told it was because of this 'fronting' business because people have been dishonest in the past about who actually is the main driver and insurance companies are now refusing to pay out if the young driver has an accident. I didnt proceed as was told that the premium would be very high but people like us are being penalised because there are dishonest people out there. However, I did question why I had been able to get a reasonable quote online and was told they would have changed the policy holder anyway when they discovered the age of my daughter as named driver, also that the web prices are just a way of getting you to take out a policy and more often than not things will have to be changed when you get down to the nitty gritty. So beware, comparison sites are not all they are cracked up to be and be prepared for further changes to your premium. My daughter did have her own car until recently but so expensive to run for the little use it got we decided to get rid of it and thought she would be able to drive my car, ha ha! Result: my daughter cannot be insured as we can't afford it! Any advice would be welcome if there is any way to get over this (legal and honest of course)
I was paying £890 for one car with son as named driver, and £200 for another with wifes two years NCD ,i have now put son as the NCD earner on older car and the total for both cars is £850 and my 65% is not being used, allowing me to get cheap insurance on another vehicle. its with admiral multi car

I recently spent some hours experimenting with different cars and driver combos to get some idea what it would cost to get my 17 yr old son and daughter mobile. I assumed they were 17, clean full license and no no claims. The moneysupermarket screen scraper is particularly easy to use when messing about with different cars/driver combo's.

Many of the issues I found have been covered above, but in addition, I found the cheapest way was Child as Main driver and policy Holder, my wife as named driver.

Cheapest Car - Classic VW Beetle.
    Renault Kangoo
    Vauxhall Aguila.
    fiat seicento
No style, but wat can u do!

I'm sure there are lots of others, but these were particularly good for a boy where the loading is often 100%.

I also found with many cars, the engine cc was less critical than percieved style and popularity of the car.

Have 2 cars between 3 of us. Hubby and I both have full ncb and years of driving experience and son age 24 who has been driving 4 years with no claims.

Cars are focus 1.8 registered 1999 and KA 1.3 registered 2007. Up to now I have been main driver on the focus with son and hubby as additional driver. I drive the car most of the time with son occasionally and hubby who is insured as main driver for KA but only driving KA occasionally.

Just phoned up directline to ask if son can be insured on KA as additional driver as well as the focus, so that when Im using the focus he will have access to the KA (hubbies main car which he hardly drives). They accused us of insurance fronting on the focus despite them renewing the insurance via phone only 2 months ago. How can this be so when I drive the focus more than him?

Anyway, have now decided to put him as main driver on the KA as it is a lot cheaper for him to be main driver insurance on that compared to the focus even though the KA is a lot newer and more expensive. Seems crazy. Guess its down to engine size.

Did you try a Citroen 2CV? I think you'll find this comes in even cheaper than the beetle! I'd never checked out a Kangoo before though...is that the 1.2? Which would surely be pap in a van type thing but if its cheap...!

There are also massive variations due to postcode.
Other people are clearly seeing MUCH higher premiums.

I'm curious about the postcode variations? Would this be by county, town or street?
All of those may have an effect!
And is it related to crime or bad driving records?
It'll mainly be based on the number and cost of actual claims they've paid out in that particular area.
  • Thanks for all the useful advice from contributors.
Admiral multi car has reduced sons (19)and daughters (18) insurance from £1700 each to £700 and £800 respectively.
As a learner at 17 we found vauxhall tigra 1.4 to be cheaper than a corsa. Maybe because few 17 year olds drive tigras and they are really only suitable for driver and 1 passenger so no 'mates' egging you on from back seats. She loves her sporty looking car and we love the insurance quote.
Now have youngest son rapidly approaching 17th birthday and I have the trauma of trawling through comparison sites again. Have gone for a 1.0 corsa for him. Hth

Looking to buy a vw polo 1.2 ,searched comparison sites etc,and quotes i'm getting back are over 3-4k. I turn 25 next week, passed in 2005 with pass plus, but yet cant seen to be able to get quote down.
I'm 90% sure its due to the postcode I live in bradford, this would be my first car,is their any way in which I could get this quote down.
  • I used Admiral for my 18 year old daughters first year of insurance with a policy in her name. I then chose the largest excess to bring the premiums down and then I insured the excess for around £48 per year. I also used the accelerated NCB policy with Admiral. :T

Hi, this is really odd as I have my son and daughter on my car insurance with Direct Line with no trouble at all. First my son, then when she started driving, my daughter. They are 20 and 18 now. They are building up their own no claims bonus as named drivers too. But I've never tried to claim......

Yes, it is because you live in Bradford. We were discussing on another thread a few months ago, there is a postcode area in Bradford where something utterly ridiculous like 58% (iirc) of drivers are UNinsured.

How did you do this please?! I've done the same thing with Admiral - think of it as a TPFT policy with a few extras like windscreen cover etc. Bear in mind that whilst the excess is insured, if she EVER claims on the comp part, the premiums will go through the roof.
