Hi, this is really odd as I have my son and daughter on my car insurance with Direct Line with no trouble at all. First my son, then when she started driving, my daughter. They are 20 and 18 now. They are building up their own no claims bonus as named drivers too. But I've never tried to claim......

Had my son as an additional driver on my directline policy for 4 years. He took one year off for travelling. Just got a quote for him being the main driver now, and they only allowed one year No Claims Discount due to the fact he had that break of a year. Also told me the No Claims Discount is not the same as no claim bonus and not worth as much. Quote for 1.3 KA with driving experience of 4 years with one year No Claims Discount...........£1100  with £450 excess but said because of his age (24), will have to pay £750 . That includes me and hubby as additional drivers but was told even if we werent additional drivers, quote would be the same. :(

Did you try a Citroen 2CV? I think you'll find this comes in even cheaper than the beetle! I'd never checked out a Kangoo before though...is that the 1.2? Which would surely be pap in a van type thing but if its cheap...!

Sorry forgot the 2cv, thats a good'un too. Kangoo 1.2. Interesting comment about the Tigra above as that on the outside would look a bit sporty, but I'm told no teenage boy woul dbe seen dead in one, so that probably the secret of this hunt!

Therefore, be a girl, living in the middle of nowhere, driving a deeply undesirable car, between the hours of dawn to dusk, and you're sorted!

    Hi everyone

    hope this helps someone

my son was 17 on 30th Nov, passed his test yesterday 17/3/11, woo hoo!!! :j I searched high and low for insurance for his own car a citroen 1100 saxo, worth just £800. Best i found was admiral multi car. I have to move my insurance over to them, but not til November when my policy expires so they priced him at £2200, 3rd party fire and theft, and me from Nov - March £80 fully comp. I added myself as an extra driver and also my friend who didn't mind and had a clean licence. Basically it seems you can add anyone but clean licence is important.

I think £2200 is a good price compared to most others, if anyone has any other ideas let me know as have the 2 weeks cooling off!!! Hope this helps someone, Karen :)

Passed even quicker than me. :p I've found with Admiral that putting that the car is kept on the street rather than the driveway is cheapest, bizarrely... only saves a few quid but may as well. Also consider doing it fully comp, but racking the xs up to max. That way it'll be only about £5 more expensive (probably, was for me) but you get windscreen cover, hire car and a couple of other things...

Can you put other people that drive the car rarely, if at all?

Basically I've looked at a quote and don't know if this is right or not. A Peugout 206 using the registration number (my mate put on Facebook he's selling it so I thought I'd take a look at insurance) it says it's valued at £2495 according to their "industry experts", whether that's true or not I have no idea he doesn't say what he wants. It came to ~£153 a month for a 10 month policy (Accelerated NCB), and about £143 for a 12 month.

I've since added (fake names until I ask them/take the policy out, but true details (right DOB, both students etc)) 2 of my housemates who have their own cars. They are 2 20 year old females, both students living away from home, no claims, driving license for ~2 years and both drive another car. The price is now coming to £962 for 10 months and £1104 (£92 p/m) for 12 months. This would be my first ever car & policy as a nearly 20 year old male - surely those prices are too cheap?

It's for Third Party Fire & Theft (about £5 more than Third Party only), and a tenner included for windscreen cover.

Edit: Added my girlfriend (no car) and it's shot up, so I'm guessing those 2 having a car makes a difference as it expects they won't be driving mine?

Stranger things have happened before. I pay less than that and I'm also 19. My gf reduced my policy by about £15, although she's a learner and we live together; both factors which reduced the premium. When (if at this rate!) she passes it'll go up by about £100.

I will be 28 when I renew with 7 years driving never had any claims drive 8000miles a year and am a student and live in liverpool city(Postcode L6)

I did the same as you as my son had been a named driver for his first year, so I asked for 2 years no claims bonus and it bought the price down by £400 - from £1,200 to £800.
He goes to Uni in Sept so wont use the car after that. Does anyone know if you can get 6 months car insurance :j
