Something to plan for later this year
when all the students head off to
    college or university

when my nephew started at university
they had everything sorted for him.
But one thing they forgot was that on
the day they moved into the student
    accomodation.theres lots of every day
items that they still need needed
My mum came up with the suggestion
that we make him a student hamper.

We bought a collapsable crate and filled it with
    essential items,tea,coffee,biscuits,washing up liquid,
    cloths,polish and cleaners,t towels,soap powder etc
cant remember everything that was in it

When we got there to drop it off,he was
sharing with four other students, they were in
the middle of writing out a shopping list for
the items mentioned and wondering where
the nearest shop was.He was really pleased
with it and only had to nip out for a pint of milk.

Everyone buys books, kettles etc but on the
day its the little things like this that add up
and no one gives much thought to.

That's a great idea rosekitten - it would work for someone moving into their first home too.

I remember when my best friends both went to uni (I started work instead) I did them both a 'survival kit' in a shoebox - pack of envelopes and writing paper, with stamps, to keep in contact (was before everyone had mobile phones, so maybe a top-up voucher or similar would work better now), bar of chocolate, box of matches, a couple of little decorative bits to make their digs a bit more homely etc - can't recall everything now - it was years ago.

I also remember our (mine and hubby's) first trip to Asda after buying our first house - the lady on the till knew we'd just moved in purely by the fact that most of the trolley was full of cleaning materials, loo roll etc, topped with a week of ready meals (long before I discovered OS) - like your nephew, we'd spent the weeks before gathering together furniture and electrical items, and totally forgotten about feeding ourselves or cleaning the house etc

When a friend of mine left work to have a baby I made a birth survival kit which contained..

perfume free bath soak and moisturiser
fluffy house coat (for middle of the night feeds)
nipple cream (not thought of by first time mums!)
hot chocolate sachets (to get back to sleep)
bottle of wine (for when breast feeding was over!)
and a hand written poem and promise of baby sitting and my phone number on a post it note and a line to say she could call me any time she needed to.
Went down very well as everyone treats the baby and mum is often forgotten in the rush to hold the baby.

I just thought I'd say - if anyone's on holiday in Munich or knows someone who's going, there's a supermarket called V-Markt that has the largest selection of baskets I've ever seen, for very cheap.

Keep an eye on your local discount shops. Mine (It's A Gift in the Northants area if anyone's close by) has some lovely printed tissue in this week - just 50p for 20 sheets. There were about 4 designs, but I only bought the two - have no use for them yet, but couldn't resist, lol.

(Sorry about the picture size - Photobucket is still crashing when I try to edit anything :o )

Really really sorry I haven't answered sooner, had some problems with my computer but all that seemed nothing when a close family member was seriously hurt in a car crash, it's been a nightmare of a time and it's only now I've had time (or inclination) to look at my favourite threads.

I would say to get a memory card that you can put your absolute favourite photos on, adding more as you see fit. At the start, I just used the one off the camera, but there are photos that I didn't want deleting but didn't want on display either :D . Hope this helps, sorry about the delay.

It's my turn to be really really sorry now kbl - I didn't realise I had a reply :o

I hope whoever was involved in the car crash is making a good recovery x

Thanks for the reply btw x

Here's a pic of the basket (well it's a tray really) that I've put together for my mum's birthday present...

    th_IMGP1851.jpg

I used a wooden high-sided tray from Morrisons (was only about £1.50 I think) and have included 3 audio book cassettes - my mum loves these, a flannel cupcake, a cross stitched coaster and 2 cross stitched plant pokes - the two stick things on the outside of the cellophane. I'm also going to make her birthday cake (maybe lots of pretty cupcakes rather than one big cake) and some ice-cream.

    Hope she likes it!
