Another vote for beef stir fry ...

    STIR FRIED BEEF

    Serves 2

    INGREDIENTS

    250g of beef
½ a bunch of spring onions
    112g (½ a 225g tin) of bamboo shoots
    1 tablespoon of sunflower oil
120g sachet of black bean or oyster sauce

    METHOD

Cut the beef into very thin strips. Wash the spring onions, cut off the root ends and leaves, peel off and discard any dried up or slimy outer leaves, then chop into 1cm (½ inch) pieces. Open the tin of bamboo shoots and drain off the liquid.

Put the oil into a frying pan or wok on a medium heat. Add the beef. Fry for about 3 minutes until cooked. Stir frequently to stop it sticking. Add the spring onions. Continue to fry for another minute. Stir frequently to stop it sticking.

Add the bamboo shoots and sauce. Continue to fry for another minute. Stir frequently to stop it sticking.

    ADDITIONS & ALTERNATIVES

Add 112g (½ a 225g tin) of water chestnuts. Add ½ a sweet pepper, cut into slices (see below). Serve with boiled rice or noodles.

    TIPS

HOW TO CUT A ROUND SWEET PEPPER INTO STRAIGHT SLICES
Cut the top and bottom off but don’t throw them away. Remove and discard the middle bit with the seeds. Make a cut down the pepper. Open it out. The round pepper is now a rectangular pepper. Cut into slices. Cut the stalk out of the top end and then chop it and the bottom end into tiny pieces. Add the chopped pepper to the dish.

My Mum gave me some thin cut beef steaks and I have no idea what to do with them. I have very little money until pay day, so would like to use simple ingredients, store cupboard ingredients, or I can put it in the freezer until I have been paid and treat myself with ingredients, but I just don't know how to cook it or what with??

If these are from a shop rather than a butchers, I've always found them to be a tad bit tough even though they're so thin. I usually slice into really thin strips and use in a stir fry - a good way to use up bits and pieces from the fridge too! I don't have a recipe, just the steak (as much needed for the one meal and freeze the rest) plus what ever I happen to have lurking in the fridge that needs using up.

Amazing how a tiny amount of meat can go such a long way when you have a few additions! :D

I was thinking stir fry, that's normally a good end of month meal, healthy and tasty!!! Will look up that Chinese hot pot now
  • You could use it to make beef olives......

Wrap the steak around some sausagemeat, seal in the pan and cook in the oven in a low heat 140 C for about an hour and a half in some gravy...yummy. It's also nice with some haggis in the middle.

    Hi lyndsey80,

There's an earlier thread that has lots of ideas and recipes that should help so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.
