After checking over the customer reviews on these products, I would recommend the Logitech X140 2.0 PC Speakers or LOGITECH Z323 2.1 PC Speakers. Both sets of speakers have had excellent reviews left by other customers.
I read this as the Comet rep using his own resources for a look-up on items which have good reviews, which is fair enough.
He then goes on to write the Make and Model numbers of his best recommendation, which are entirely different to Comet's own product codes {I checked}.
So yes, the OP will be free to source the speakers from wherever they wish. Average price I saw was just under £15 in the first few google hits - and, just for stamps, Comet have a price match offer on these items.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I will never, never , ever buy from Comet again. Especially Aintree branch in Liverpool. We couldn't swap a toshiba television in Feb, 1 hour after purchase, because it was an older model, that the salesman didnt tell us about. It struggled to match the television we were replacing (a 5 year old Samsung) in standard mode. He told us it was a good deal, that it was £200 pound off, but we only saw the picture in HD. He did not tell us that it was an older model, and that £200 off was meaningless, because newer ones, for the same price, were most likely better TV's. Being only 1 hour old, surely they wouldnt lose that much money on it, compared to losing me for a lifetime as a customer .
We also had problems in 2009, returning a Samsung video camera, as they tried to say it was neglect, and that we had dropped it, without even looking at it. It turns out it was a well known fault with that product; that sony disks wouldnt finalise. I had a bad feeling about buying there again, but my girlfriend liked this Toshiba - looks wise.
My advice - buy from Tescos and Asda . They replace, even if opened and used. There is no hard sell. The products are not old stock. The staff friendly, and rarely even ask why you are returning, as its policy is to exchange anyway inside 30 days. The staff at Aintree comet are also hard as nails, and huff as soon as you start explaining your problem. They are set up with all cables and equipment to test the product at the customer desk. Are they on bonuses, for every faulty product they can fob you off with by claiming neglect?
Update : Took a camcorder back today to Jessops in Southport, 2 days old, because the mic is muffled a bit in my opinion. Happy smiling faces, didnt even test it, offered me refund or new one. Said he didnt know anything about video cameras to even test it. Imagine trying to say its a bit muffled to Comet. I will now buy from Asda, Tescos, or Jessops with peace of mind. Even got a follow up e-mail from Jessops, to ask was I happy with the return. There is a good reason why Comet wouldnt do that.
Horrible horrible girl at Aintree Comet - huffing as I am explaining I was not happy, whilst setting up her testing leads. Yes I should have researched, yes its my fault, but I will never shop there again whether I am right or wrong. So well done comet, on making a customer v unhappy.0 -

Had your sister not used the laptop then we would of course exchanged within our returns policy terms and conditions.

But how would she know they were poor quality if she didn't test them out? In my experience, basically, you offer hardly no returns policy at all. Anything brought back faulty, is tested out, on the spot. It would be nightmare for intermittent faults. If Comet can blame misuse, they will try in my experience. The salesman can say what he wants, as there is no proof what he said, after you buy the product. You can research on internet, but websites are sometimes biased, and reviews cannot be trusted. Amazon.co.uk apparently regulary deletes negative reviews, even high rated reviews. The only way to see a product is good quality, is to test it out. Some places offer this, or at least dont ask too many questions, if you say there is something wrong with the sound, and refund you. Why should retailers foot the bill for goods repackaged? Its economics.. In these days of Facebook, I can warn 339 people they may have 'return problems' if they shop at Comet Aintree in 30 seconds of my time.
If you are unhappy with a retailer, just dont shop there again, and spread the word to as many people as possible of your experience through your facebook, including review sites at the top of google listings. Only consumer power will change greedy retailer policies, to ensure every customer is happy when they fork out £400 for a new PC.
My views are mostly based on my experience with My local - 'Aintree Comet on Merseyside' and other stories on the web, back my view up.0 -
I don't think retailers SHOULD foot the bill for lazy consumers.
If you sold somebody something and they came back and said "actually I don't like it." and wanted a refund knowing that if you tried to sell it again, you'd have to reduce the price by at least 10% would you be happy?
Tesco and Asda can afford to, because they have questionable business practices elsewhere that allow them to hold smaller suppliers to ransom.
With Jessops, if she didn't know anything about cameras, the chances are she was a new staff member who'll get in a bit of trouble for taking something back like that, or they'll be lucky, it WILL be faulty and they can send it back to the manufacturer for a refund.
I'm not big on people abusing returns though, because it'll just lead to prices going up to cover the losses from serial returners.0 -

Thats what the hide buttons for! :rotfl:0 -
As mentioned above research before is better than regret after.
Companies have to tighten there returns policy to stop people treating things as free trials, after all as soon as they accept a change of mind return they have instantly lost money as to resell it they have to sell it as used.
And with a netbook they will have to ref lash the software and repackage it then sell it at maybe 20% off.
And the margin on electronics is pretty small to begin with

I was sorry to hear that the speakers on your sisters laptop aren't the quality she was expecting. Had your sister not used the laptop then we would of course exchanged within our returns policy terms and conditions.
An alternative suggestion would be to use additional speakers which will enhance the sound and she will be able to get some at a reasonable price, as I can appreciate your sister will have already spent quite a lot on the laptop.

I have used many a item at Tescos, and taken it back. I have used it as a free trial. But then I have spent over £1000 quality stuff like a Toshiba PC, a DVD player and Mobile that were really quality products. I then spend at least £500 a month on shopping. The whole point of a 30 day no quibbles is to test it. Moral of the story - shop at a place u are worth something to. Comet customer service aintree are a nasty bunch, because I am not worth anything to them. Good on them, but the future is a happy customer. Only they will survive in a world I can tell 500 people at the click of a button, they will have a nightmare with faulty - poor quality goods from comet.0
