I think if you set yourself a goal to watch less TV every day you'll find you have much more time to do more productive things.

I really don't think TV is the best choice out of everything out there. You can buy subject books (or use library/internet) and teach yourself something, or get a subscription to a newspaper, go for walks, board games, and so on.

Setting aside all this which you probably already know. The Internet has basically everything on Sky on it somewhere, everything that's worth bothering with anyway. I'm guessing you have net subscription, if not it's a better option than Sky, really. TV + newspaper + books + games + everything, all there. I don't really know why people choose to pay Sky instead of just searching for what they want on Google. You have to actively want something sure, but that's a GOOD thing, makes you realise that most of the time you're probably watching crap.

Edit: I see that McKneff covered most of it above.

    Hey MrsD :)

You have to have *some* perks in life, or you'd go insane! Personally paid TV isn't something I've ever felt I need (Freeview for me), but I have my other indulgances instead.

Going down from £72 to £46 is a good result, though I wouldn't depend on Sky cutting a similar deal in six months time. :) So you may want to see if there are any packages you can honestly do without - tricky if hubby likes sport, I suspect! Maybe keep a note of what you don't watch much and ditch those sections?

Aside from that, it's your 'living and entertainment' budget, so spend it how you want. Sky *is* a luxury, really, whichever way you swing it, but if it's your only one, then why not? :)

Everyone is different, I could never pay £46 a month to watch tv, and the thought of paying £72  There's more than enough choice for me on Freeview.

    We all have different priorities.

I spend about £30 a month on my pets - to some people that would be ridiculous.

Well done on getting to grips with your debt, I'm chipping away slowly at my mortgage.

Got to say I recently cancelled sky as it isn't really worth the money. I'm on BT vision now which has the same pause/rewind stuff and lots of free on demand programmes and films, it's only costing us £2 more than if we didn't have it as it's bundled with phone and internet.

    Remember £46 a month is about £550 a year.

I'd say £46 is excessive. I only have a small mortgage but would not pay this for TV services. i have freeview. suits me. Don't have much time to watch tv and would rather read anyway if had choice.

What would concern me if that if you can still justify £46 for TV, then how long before you justify other sums for other things? Just trying to be honest and think you should ask yourself too. Obviously getting into debt, you have probably justified that you deserved something or it's just another this or that. I don't know, I'm not you but if you owe money, I think you need to cut out as much junk from your budget as possible and to me, this is not a good use of your money.

Yes I understand and totally get you, I have Sky and hardly watch any of it but if this OP doesn't go out, nor spends money on cinema or meals out then surely roughly £7 per week is OK for the family to sit in and watch their fave TV channels?

I am looking at it from the OP's perspective, it's not like it's warm outside, it's bloody freezing at the moment, we don't live in a comfortably warm climate where the outdoors can dominate our lives :( Let's be realistic here, from the months of November to April it's pretty bleak in the UK so let's cut some slack here :)

Sky television is a luxury, not a right nor a necessity. If you can afford it, then that's fine, but you can't. Sorry if you find it hurtful to hear, but it's just a factual description of your situation.

Plenty of people manage more than adequate quality of life without the top Sky package, or even no Sky television at all. A Freeview box will cost you a one-off £15 and provide you with loads of channels. It's an attitude more than anything, you might say that the £46 per month won't make much difference, but if you aren't prepared to sacrifice luxuries even when you are in a deep financial hole, it will be hard for you to ever get back into a sensible spending pattern. The advice is well-meantm don't take it to heart. Ultimately it's always your chioce whether you choose to follow the advice or not.

And I totally get you - I can see this from both sides, which is why I think maybe the right answer is somewhere in the middle, I don't begrudge somebody a small amount of entertainment if they've cut out absolutely everything else - after all, what's the point of life if you can't enjoy anything?

But £46 for sky is still a lot, especially if you have limited funds, I was only paying £22 a month! There are cheaper packages out there, as mentioned BT vision might be an option as it worked out virtually free for me and has loads of content.

True FB, I pay £19 p/m and I still don't watch hardly any of the channels but I like having Sky+ at least I can watch what I want when I want.

So MrsD can you cut your subscription down to £19? That would give you more than half to pay towards your debt.
