Failed Medical Stats.

Can anyone on here tell me how many people (numbers or percentages) are failing the ATOS medical at the first attendance? Despite Googling I can’t find a definitive answer.

Thanks

You can download the statistics here:

The latest were released January 2011

    Thanks Mrsmanda

It confirms all I have heard from various sources.

Even folks at the Job Centre told me few got through first time.

Just looking at the stats from the first page or so is so depressing. Copied below. I will read more later but I was turned down yesterday on incomplete NI contributions. I have been getting credits for quite a while but they do not count so I found out this morning!!! When I was paying a few years ago I was three weeks short of getting the OK. Three weeks which were costing me £2.40 per week. So £8.20's worth short. So sickening.

The person at the Job Centre said well you would still have needed to get through the medical and statistically could of failed as so many do. I would of been dumbstruck if I hadn't got through in my state of health.

For all new ESA Claims from 27th October 2008 to 31st May 2010, the result of the initial WCA is as follows:

    Support Group - 6%
    Work Related Activity Group -16%
Fit for Work - 39% Claim closed before assessment complete - 36%
Assessment still in progress - 3%

Do you really think that a 39% fail rate is that high, because I don't.

I am totally (100%) behind the weeding out of those trying to avoid work. The reason I am pretty (extremely) annoyed that I was turned down based on my incomplete NI record. Especially after asking time and time again for assurances my record was OK to start the claim in the first place.

Hi Luminated, apologies if I have got this wrong, but were you turned down for Contributions-based ESA, and if so could you try claiming Income-based ESA instead? As I understand it, that's what people who don't have the relevant NI contributions usually do if they need to claim ESA.

Interesting to note that 36% don't even complete their application.

I do not qualify as savings just over the maximum limit but they are shrinking very fast as I have been living off them for three years to avoid claiming benefits.

    But thanks for the thought.

I think this is mainly because you can claim ESA if you are ill for 4 days or more and don't get SSP. Therefore it's perfectly possible that many people apply for short term illnesses and have recovered by the time they get a WCA appointment (should get a WCA appointment within 13 weeks).

In this case, once your money has dwindled, I should think you'll be able to claim income-related ESA if you need it. Good luck.
