Yes - it has historical significance
If you used that logic you could argue why do we have Christmas Day, Good Friday and Easter Monday. The French celebrate Bastille Day which is over 200 years old, and I'm sure most countries have some of their Bank holidays based on notable historical dates. What would you prefer? A day off to mark Jade Goody's birthday??

I prefer the Maltese style the had an extra bank holiday when Man Utd won the league, now that would have been quite fruitful over the past 20 years :)

It's just as well it's not when Tottenham win the league :(.

We get the Queen's Birthday off here as I believe they do in New Zealand and Canada. We also have a 'Bank Holiday' (the rest are public holidays). It's in August and only the banks get it, nobody else. I guess it's in recognition of the sterling work we do.

Perhaps they could change May Day for a Bank Holiday in the UK too. It seems fitting given the current situation.

Another vote for 11th Nov here.

In Aus we have ANZAC day as a public holiday (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps). It's good to celebrate the people that offer their lives to defend the rest of our freedoms.

It's funny (to me) that this year ANZAC day falls on the Monday after Easter Sunday. How do you deal with that because ANZAC day is when it is, you can't just move it. So now Easter Monday in on the Tuesday. Simples! (link)

I think it is tied in with the Gallipoli landings is it not? It must be unusual for a country to have one of its celebratory holidays based on a defeat, although I guess the main focus is on the loss of life icon9.gif One plus from the Gallipoli campaign was the most amazing retreat in history with (I think) not one life lost in withdrawal.

It's the anniversary of the date of the landings at Gallipoli.

The significance wasn't really so much in the horror of what happened - hell WW1 was pretty horrific from start to finish. The significance really is that it was about the first thing of real significance that Australia did on it's own.

The problem with this is that there is less than 9 hours of daylight in the North West. Much prefer the spring dates, although love the Aussies with their local public holidays for agricultural shows and minor horse races. This is on top of the Melbourne Cup / Adelaide Cup public holidays.

The closest I can think was when the Derby (Epsom) was on a Thursday or Aintree 'Ladies' day before the National in Liverpool, where increasingly offices are empty on the friday.

But a far higher % of 'diggers' died as they were up the pecking order for cannon fodder icon9.gif

To clarify I don't mean that the diggers were the only ones fighting. I understand there were a few Turks there for a starter! I mean that it was the first time Australia had done anything of great significance as a country outside her own borders after Federation.
