No - whatever the Condems say is fine by meWhat's the point of Trafalgar Day? Celebrating a sea battle won over the Spanish & French more than 200 years ago?
If you used that logic you could argue why do we have Christmas Day, Good Friday and Easter Monday. The French celebrate Bastille Day which is over 200 years old, and I'm sure most countries have some of their Bank holidays based on notable historical dates. What would you prefer? A day off to mark Jade Goody's birthday??0 -

Nah. Jade Goody Day would be 5 June. Too close to the Spring bank holiday.0 -

Yes - it has historical significanceWhat the **** is the Minister of Tourism (a minor nobody in the Government) doing messing about with our bank holidays?
Hands off, you junior idiot.0 -
Yes - it has historical significanceAs long as you're happy, don't worry about the 60+ million of us.:D
If we're talking about the good of 60+ million then they should scrap the bank holiday altogether. This fits in fine with my schedules too as it means I've got an extra day to sort things out.

Yes - it has historical significanceNew BH - yes please, moving an old one - don't bother!saving up another deposit as we've lost all our equity.
We're 29% of the way there...0 -
Another crap Poll set up by someone trying to push their own opinion, and not allowing any answers that don't fit.
Very Stalinist.
Yes May Day has historical and public interest, but that is no reason to keep it irrespective of the consequences.
In the U.S.A. Labour (Labor) Day, the day for the "Workers" is in September, and moving the Workers Day in the U.K. to an October date would make the public holidays available to the workers more evenly spread throughout the year.
Political ideolegy should not come into the decision.'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0 -
Don't care - what's on telly this weekend?I'd scrap all bank holidays except xmas and new years day. I would prefer to have the extra days added onto my hoiday entitlement, them I could use them at a time convienient for me.0

Yes - it has historical significancePerhaps because it was one of the defining moments in the history of this country?
St. George's day is a non-starter for us Celts.
BTW, I agree that May day has no historical significance in the UK - I recall when it was first introduced. Better a BH between Aug & Dec. Hope this winds up the Guardianista's.;)
Mayday is both a traditional English celebration throughout the centuries, Maypole, Mayqueen etc, it also a Celtic festival of Beltane (I had to look that up BTW
). Why do you say it has no historical sigificance? We all know why the Tories right wingers wish to ban it
'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
Don't care - what's on telly this weekend?Agreed, but can't we find something more recent?

My vote is for Poppy Day/Remembrance Day on 11 Nov.
Another vote for 11th Nov here.
In Aus we have ANZAC day as a public holiday (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps). It's good to celebrate the people that offer their lives to defend the rest of our freedoms.
It's funny (to me) that this year ANZAC day falls on the Monday after Easter Sunday. How do you deal with that because ANZAC day is when it is, you can't just move it. So now Easter Monday in on the Tuesday. Simples! (link)Easter Monday
