i know i'm a bit of a prole at heart but it's annoyed me that the condems now want to move May Day - a holiday associated with international worker's day and Labour Day.

Whitsun is one of the May Bank Holidays.
That said, I would like a a BH in October time (I like the idea of a Trafalgar Day), ideally I'd like it to be an extra BH, but the reality may be one of the May ones has to go......0 -
I'm not voting in your poll as its silly.
If you had an option for "just create another bank holiday in the Autumn" i'd vote for that. We already have one of the lowest public holiday amounts in Europe.0 -
No - whatever the Condems say is fine by meI like the sound of having a Bank Holiday for Trafalgar Day, as it's a National day of pride, and also it falls slap bang between the August Bank holiday and Christmas. Everyone says after August that there's nothing for four months, and this would alleviate that problem. Also, Mayday isn't a very particularly British thing. St George's day would be good, but again it's slap bang between Easter and Whitsun, so my vote would be for Trafalgar Day, October 21st.0

Yes - it has historical significanceOctober or February bank holiday would be much better. I don't want them to move the May Day one as I've already scheduled work in around those dates for 2012. Also, if we had moved May day this year we would be up to 4 BH's in April on its own.0

Yes - it has historical significanceWhat's the point of Trafalgar Day? Celebrating a sea battle won over the Spanish & French more than 200 years ago?0

Perhaps because it was one of the defining moments in the history of this country?
St. George's day is a non-starter for us Celts.
BTW, I agree that May day has no historical significance in the UK - I recall when it was first introduced. Better a BH between Aug & Dec. Hope this winds up the Guardianista's.;)In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:0 -

As long as you're happy, don't worry about the 60+ million of us.:DIn case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:0 -
Yes - it has historical significanceMay day is good for those of us with gardens.....it lets you get a good extra day of work in just as you need it most, tbh I always thought that was a rational behind late spring early summer holidays, children at home to help and important for GYO types. I have no idea where I made that leap from. Also, its when a lot of local fundraising starts (I believe its the beginning of our Scarecrow competition here). And, f recent years, some of he best weather in the year. Those repeated bank holidays are good for big home diy jobs that you can start one weekend and finish the next one. And you get oodles of daylight to enjoy. It IS associated with Britain...Beltane for the pagan celts is around then isn't it? And the first day of summer. Maypoles are undeniably an old British tradition, May Queens etc etc
But it IS a long depressing pull to winter. And we have fewer then the rest of Europe. I think, despite economic cost, we should have anther in the autumn. After all, many sepnd them trawling the shops, and everyone work with more vigour when well rested.0
