;41746920]There's absolutely no doubt that the vast vast majority of Dell Outlet machines are fine in every way - I've had machines from there before which have been fine, and I know of friends with Outlet laptops that they're thrilled to bits with. I wasn't suggesting that large amounts of faulty machines are sold, I was saying that those that are faulty have shockingly poor post-sales support :(
I am sure the same thing could be said of other major brands. Maybe a "Beware you may have problems with Dell C/s if you have a faulty one"
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

That's like saying "If you bought a FarePak hamper you might not get it"...

• Quick update on this bunch of cretins,
When the lying thief, oops sorry I meant support staff member, who took the additional fifty quid off me asked for my payment, I gave it begrudgingly and only because I got a specific assurance that this would expedite matters and get me a computer faster than any other method of resolution. The quote that was emailed to me, the invoice that was mailed to me straight after the payment, and the thief herself, ALL said a delivery date of 2nd March. But as I said in my first post, that then slipped to 14th. And today I got a phone call at 7pm from someone who apparently works in the 'social media department', who's job it is to monitor various forums, Twitter, etc and 'help' customers there. He'd come across one of my rants at their pathetic service and had decided to assist.

I say 'assist', but what I meant to say was 'navel-gaze', because his help appeared to consist of looking up my order number (which I have the URL to look at myself) and observe that my computer was still 'in production' and so was not now going to be with me on Monday 14th after all. What could he do about this? Ummm, well he could send an 'expedite form'. Wow, thanks. Because, hey, it's not as though there isn't any expedite forms on my service tag already, is it? Oh hang on, yes there are...

The real problem to me now is, there doesn't seem to be a decent way forward. I mean yes, of course, I can have a refund, but as I've pointed out already that leaves me with a stonking loss. And, of course, I'd have to wait several weeks for it. Dell would have caused me severe inconvenience, generally been pathetic with service, and sat on my money for a month, and then they'd make me wait to just get my money back. I want to go out and purchase a computer of similar specification locally and simply sue Dell for the cost of it, and I can't work out whether or not that would be seen as me taking the least-costly way of resolving the issue while at the same time ensuring that I don't suffer any more inconvenience than I already have. Any thoughts/precedents for this sort of thing please?

Are you still here?

We've already established this 'stonking loss' is down purely to your own poor planning and short sightedness in taking days on end off work rather than return the thing in the first place. For some reason you think best to have all these posts from various authors who point this out to you deleted and bumble on regardless before returning to complaining about the even bigger losses this course of action continues to create for yourself.

Yes, hindsight's a wonderful tool isn't it? When I was first told that an engineer was coming the following day, I had no reason to believe he wouldn't come, and the loss to me involved in waiting for him was a reasonable one based on the savings against buying a NEW laptop. When he didn't come, I had an obvious vested interest in waiting, because to return the laptop meant that I'd have to 'write off' that first day. Each subsequent additional loss increases my need to get a solution that involves a new laptop, because the alternative is more costly each time than the last. If I'd known then it would be this tiresome, of course I'd have taken it. Unfortunately the batteries were flat in my crystal ball.

I didn't, and can't, delete posts. Perhaps they were removed because moderators found them not to be in keeping with the idea of people helping each other rather than calling them playground names?

I almost bought a Dell once and I'm so pleased now that I didn't. Yours isn't the first horror story I've read about them and I'm sure it won't be the last.

Incidentally I think you've done the right thing to publicise your problems and expose Dell's atrocious customer service and in future instead of banging your head against a brick wall dealing with the brain dead automatons in India why not contact BBC's Watchdog or one of the national newspapers to see if they'll run with the story? In my experience nothing gets problems resolved faster than the threat of bad publicity and the effect that would have on company profits.

Hope you get it sorted.
• Final update on the above - Dell finally delivered my laptop yesterday (actually they didn't, I had to go and find the courier because he'd got lost finding my house), the 18th March, thirty-two days after the original order.

For any unfortunate person following in my footsteps, I suggest you save the time and ink spent writing a recorded delivery complaint to Dell's HQ in Bracknell, because they simply scanned it and emailed it straight off to India again!

All that's left now is to negotiate some form of recompense for the grief, but I don't hold out a lot of hope really - in my complaint letter I said
"last week some joker suggested Dell would extend my warranty as a gesture of goodwill for my troubles. I can only hope he was kidding - why on earth would I subject myself to several more years of Dell’s appalling customer support?"
During the night I got an email from India saying
"I am glad to inform you that we would be able to offer you one year extended warranty as goodwill gesture."
Honestly, you couldn't make it up, could you? ;)
• Seems to be a lot of Dell lovers about today.
It doesn't matter how good your Dell is, the OPs is useless and the service from dell sounds atrocious.
