Apple's philosophy has always been about exemplary user experience (at least in their view!) and will not permit anything which is second-rate. There is no doubt that including Flash on the iPad would mean they cannot ensure that sites will work.
But not including flash on the iPad means that they guarantee that sites will not work. Hardly an exemplary user experience.

Hmm... where do those prices come from? They include prices from before May 28 which was when the iPad was released in the UK. I suspect they're considering the price people are paying on something like eBay for an imported version?

Unless I'm mistaken the iPad went straight on sale in the UK at £429 and stayed there until the current price drop to £329.

No idea where the prices come from magy. ISTR that I've heard about price drops (Google suggests Apple and several UK carriers dropped prices in November) but I'm not that close to Apple's pricing. I tend to go by spec more than price and then look for the best deal having decided on the spec I want which, due to the expandable memory issue, has never included Apple products (yet).

The issue with flash is that it is a battery sucking imcumbent piece of software that should be binned. However, 99.9% of the web uses it and that is the problem.

There's no viable alternative to the myriad of functions Flash serves currently, it will be a long, long time (if at all) before St Steve's prophecies come true.

I nearly bought an Ipad a couple of days ago, but held back. I do have an iphone 4 and must admit to loving it. Is the ipad not just a bigger version of this. Sorry to sound dense, but would I be better opting for the ipad 2?

Depends what you want it for. I still don't have a good answer for that myself when it comes to tablets ;) Go play with one in person. Plenty on it seems gimmicky, stuff you'd only do once or twice - or very occasionally. Excellent screen, excellent user interface, extremely responsive.

Good thing you held off, considering the price of the ipad is even lower at Comets:

I don't disagree, but in practice I have to say it rarely impacts. Most of the sites I use have actually moved to non-Flash versions of streaming media.

In practice the eBay option will usually give better value anyway. An iPad in good condition will probably get 90-95% of its current new value.

What I find interesting is that Apple have taken the decision to continue to sell the current WiFi 16GB iPad for £329 in advance of the iPad 2 coming in (presumably around the old iPad price of £429).

What this means is the 2nd-hand value will now be around £300-ish, meaning people wanting to upgrade will be paying £130.

Another option would have been to not announce the new iPad until it was ready for sale and then immediately withdraw the old one from sale. This then means the 2nd-hand value is pure market price and my gut feeling is it's more than the £300 (probably £320-330, since the new one is not really that much better). What that means is that the upgrade path for early adopters is cheaper (at no cost to Apple), which should mean more early sales.

That's really interesting magy, but I just don't understand why someone wouldn't pay just 10% more to get a brand new, unmarked, unused, full warranty, fully SOGA-protected product unless the new model was almost impossible to find. It beggars belief.

HTML 5 is currently under development, with firefox and microsoft rumoured to be adding HTML 5 support to their next browsers.

One of the main reasons apple does not add flash support is it is very power hungry, which on a mobile device is detrimental to battery life.
